Shacks are no where near ready to go out...About 50 ft away from shanty town is Open Water yet..And thats the Side opposite the Channel..The only new laws with the smelt are you cant transport and Use them on any other lake than the one their caught in..If your just jiggin them to eat ..Then your all set.. ;)

I grew up in Caroga and used to catch smelt in the inlet all of the time.  Don't know much about fishing for Splake in fact believe it or not I have never ice fished Caroga, but it seams to me that unless you were fishing with Smelt than you don't stand much of a chance landing Splake.

I knew what you meant Roy, thanks for the reply.  Fatheads are good lively bait, I will give it a try.

No stringer I just caught one splake the first day I was up there with a fat head and the second time when I met you I caught one on a smelt. Hopefully we'll run into eachother up that way again.

vroomans, but usually catching bait a little food that side may be bad for you cause you probaly can't cross the channel or at least i wouldn't!!!!

Thanks guys, my plan is to head up north, but at least check out Caroga on the way up.  With a spare set of clothes and boots of course, ha ha.  I am familiar with the lake and will not fish over my waist.

I have not been there yet but i know there has been people out on canada earlier this week and they said there was a sold 4 inches so theres got to be atleast 6 inches up there by now....the smelt are hitting pretty good at caroga me and a buddy went up last thurs afternoon and caught 11 doz between 3 and 6 pm right behind vroomans
inwellb4light I appreciate the info I look forward to jigging some smelt up myself.  Did they have any luck on canada lake?  I never have good luck on that lake.  I like it because it is close.  I wish I had better luck on that one.
