New to CNY looking for places to ice fish
« on: Dec 04, 2005, 09:06 PM »
I just moved up to CNY from southern Orange County and am looking for some places.  Not really familiar with the area so I need all the help in the world.  Thanks

orange,
Where do you live? Are you in Syracuse? There are so many places to cut a hole around here you could fish a different one every weekend all winter long!! Certain ones are safe befor others as well, let me know where your at and I'll point...

Well you got Oneida lake right there, the largest lake within the confinds of NYS.  Perch and Walleyes are the two big catches there.  Plenty of access all the way around the lake.
Also close by:
-Casanovia Lake (South/East)
-Sandy Pond (North up 81)
-Finger Lakes to your West. Otisco, Skaneateles and Owasco are the closest three.
When the going gets weird the weird turn pro.

You can head south to the Madison County chain...each lake is loaded with crappies and some have really nice pech.  Eatonbrook and Lebanon have trout, if that's your thing, while walleyes lurk in Eatonbrook and Erieville (Tuscarora).  Definitely check out the chain.  Also, Delta Lake, near Rome, has good walleye fishing and houses some MONSTER pike...good perch fishing too, from what I hear.

Welcome !

I am from Newburgh/Marlboro area..

I had a similiar "problem" when I moved here three years ago..  However, I looked at the "gazeteer" book of maps for NY ( Topo format ) and found numerous lakes and ponds to ice fish, all within 30-45 min drive from my home.  Check out the local state, county or town parks.  I did, and fished a county park with a ton of crappies.  Of course, if you prefer big water fishing, you won't have to look far .. Lot's of it close to you..

Good luck !

Al..

Sodus, Cayuga Lake, Owasco and Onieda are all not far away.  Depending on where in the syracuse area, Dryden, Whitney Point are with in an hour drive

If you look at the map youve got a ton of options,  you have oneida, then ther eis all the madison chains,    Upper adn lower lealands, stony, eaton brook, tuscarora, adn many more,    if you head south you have tully, song, crooked, goodyear?, then there is casterline, whitney point,       they all the figner lakes, otisco, owasco.   Tons and tons of options.
A lot of it depends on what you liek to target.
It doesn't matter if you didn't catch anything as long as you had fun.

Orange........

If your looking to start out with simplicity head to the north end of Otisco lake. Easy access, tons of panfish action, with an occasional tiger or two. When Skaneateles hardens try there for big perch, and a random rainbow or LL Salmon. Oneida Lake is an all day experience. Plan on walking alot to find big perch and walleyes, unless you have a sled or 4 wheeler. Talk to the local bait shops for info on Oneida on where to fish...

I go almost everyday to one of these spots so drop me a line if you like to meet up and fish.... ;D
