"Reluctance" (on ending the season)
« on: Mar 25, 2014, 09:30 AM »
Trying to step off the ice yesterday the ice caved in...only knee deep, but very cold.
I had stepped onto the end of a 10'plank I put there when I got on. But it sank.
Wallowing through to shore made me reconsider my perception of reality.

But it didn't change my mind...I knew of the hazards ahead of time, and don't do this thing
called icefishing in spite of those hazards, and adversity, but because of them.

I do not have a death wish, though it might sound like it, nothing macho here either.
What it is is a wonder?

I am done for the year, don't like wet feet, but I understand the reluctance of others not to quit.
Wish you all safe fishing.

From "Reluctance"
By Robert Frost

Out through the fields and the woods
   And over the walls I have wended;
I have climbed the hills of view
   And looked at the world, and descended;
I have come by the highway home,
   And lo, it is ended.

*But (Ah,) when to the heart of man
   Was it ever less than a treason
To go with the drift of things,
   To yield with a grace to reason,
And bow and accept the end
   Of a love or a season?

*my paraphrase

(These are the first and last stanzas of the poem.)

Tight lines to all in the soft water season.

The end of the ice fishing season is one of the saddest times of the year for me.  Oh how I wish I could ice fish every day of the year.

I too am sorry to see this season end,but also feel fortunate that we ice fished until late in March.When is the last time
we were able to do that.The last few years we hardly made it to the end of February. Lol on the open water.

I would have to say, even though the fishing was tough at times because of the long hard winter, it was enjoyable.  Met many nice fishermen out on the ice this year and look for meeting many more next year.  Getting the boat ready this weekend and hopefully will try to get to Raystown on Wednesday to fish a bit.  Gonna be strange lifting that monster rod compared to the rods I have been using for the past 3.5 months.  Hopefully everyone has a good open water season and see you all next season...fingers crossed for December ;D
