1/16oz tungsten scud
« on: Jan 27, 2021, 10:31 PM »
Searched the web but could not find a 1/16 oz tungsten scud pattern.

Found these guys all over under the ice when I drilled a few holes, they are around 1/2" long.
Any help would be appreciated.

Northland still makes a scud bug jig, different from the old one...but in a 1/64th oz jig head.

Have tied my own on 16th oz lead jig heads.
Takes like 4 different materials to make. Fly shops have tons of patterns that I know people fish through the ice on dropper rigs and do well.

I tied a bunch recently  with zonker eyes and bead heads ,different colors.
caught a lot of little sunnys on them  as a dropper
then when I hooked a minnow on like it was eating it ,got in to some eating size crappies
i think its worthy of a try

I've been tying scud patterns this year too. They seem to fish well this time of year. Instead of lead heads or beads, I wrap the hook with lead wire for weight, or run it as a dropper fly. I've been using strips of ziplock bag to make the scud backs. I'm just getting back into tying my own. Its super fun and satisfying when you can catch a fish with something you created, and you don't have to be at it to catch fish, I'm certainly not.

Below is a link to a four patterns suggested by a local fly shop. I'd try something like they suggest but vary the colors to match your hatch.

Here's some bad Larrys I tied up, I've caught fish with even uglier ones. Have at it and good luck.

Heads up- that's a sow bug, similar to a scud, but flatter profile and thicker legs. If you can find scuds, I would imitate those instead of the sowbugs- sometimes they'll be olive, tan, gray, maybe even pink or orange, as opposed to the grey sowbug. I found some perch in 50' last week, only thing left in their stomachs after blowing out were some size 20 olive scuds- thinking about dropping a scud fly off the back of a Swedish pimple next week when I'm out there.

Linking a bit of story on trout's preference between scuds and sowbugs in a certain tailwater that was lousy with sowbugs at one point-  "She said that scuds have five times more protein than sowbugs, and the fish's instincts tell them to eat the best food available at all times. To me that meant that a trout would pass up 9 sowbugs to eat one scud."

I'm not sure exactly what they weigh but widow maker lures has one called the tungsten scud missile that i use a lot. They come in lots of colors in both regular and glow.
