This picture was taken on a New Hampshire lake during our largest ice fishing derby.  The day before had wind gusts over 50 mph.  The shanty was actually chained to the ice.  At sunrise the next morning this was the calm after the wind storm.
"Hope" is not a good fishing strategy!

Sometimes you catch em (me) sometimes you don’t (my brother). Either way the experience is priceless.
To catch them all…you gotta catch them small

My fishing partner John with our 80 perch

If you sit around all day and do nothing your a bum, but if you sit in a boat all day or in a shanty and do nothing they call you a fisherman

'twas the day after Christmas, and on the hardwater
not a person was out there, except me and my daughter

everyone else stayed home, playing with presents inside
we had the lake to ourselves, open ice far and wide

the tipups were set in the ice holes with care
in hope that big perch or pike would be there

it was so silent that as we set our fourth tipup
we heard the flag on the second one whip-up

she hauled in this pike that put up a big fight
what a great day, to start the season so nice
so Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night
tight lines everyone, stay safe on the ice !

Jan 11 2019
Hour drive,Got to the public launch at day  break. Got to our spot, then people started rolling in. I would say 20-30 people came out around us. Caught a few crappie, No one else was getting anything. Then literaly everyone left within 3 hours. Lol Me and wife looking out window,  I think everyone left? Lol Wow! little bit of blank look, head scratching at each other! Lol
At about noon, bam! Me and my wife limited out in under 2 hours. 50 total! Took pic at 2:22 pm, got stuff packed up and started heading in. People seen them fish and just hauling butt out there (along with few friends we know) No one got anything after we left!

I spent every weekend of the 2018 season, and 2019 season in search of a trophy.
If I didnt have large hooks and heavy leader in the water, I had my hali jigs bouncing my favorite bait pond in search of jumbo golden shiners.
While most were using big dead smelly baits, I stuck with my gut and naturally presented my lethargic  8" golden. Mid morning, all the 2 hour rides at 4 in the morning, all the jigging, keeping my baits alive, all paid off with this 21 pound brute. Season(s) made!

What is it about this silly sport we are so enthralled with, punished over and over with weather patterns and lockjaw that brings us back. The ultimate game of bingo where the holes we drill are our chips, and structure definitions are the letters, trying to string together a sentence that spells fried walleye on the family table. Sometimes, it is just the simple gift of sun reflecting off that rod tip, surrounded by deafening solitude, yearning for that elusive tap tap.
