Both, make good skis and just place out an anchor, register it as a boat. Float it off if get an early ice out.

The PVC pipe that the salmon companies use for their pens "polar circles" would work great for that application.

It will be much less expensive if you buy the spray foam insulation and fill the standard PVC pipes yourself.

I use it on my aluminum handle fish landing nets, great floatation.

Wonder about how to get the proper toe slop .I think the spray foam is the way to go, Neighbor kids came down to local pond with skates  and I checked to see how much ice made up last night, a full inch!!!!

I want thick wall pvc. after the toe on ends is figured out .I thought skegs off snowmobile skis attach with a clamp device to the rear so it would give steering control . almost like a sled ,but fasten in place. I have even though of large culvert stock across each end .

you can get large diameter PVC  pipe either at Portland plastic pipe in south Portland or at Everett j Prescott on warren ave, Portland either are a good choice and they will have everything you want.you can bend the PVC with a torch i'v done it with not much effort.

Another great place to get PVC pipe is Gilman Electric in Portland. We *ahem* I mean -they- stock everything from 1/2" to 5" schedule 40 PVC.

There are a few companies that weld the different plastics so making the right angle would not be a problem at all. I had a mussel raft made from 3' PVC with a wall thickness of 2".

I bought 16" plastic culvert stock years ago Have a lot of short pieces 4' and 6'  long. Just have to engineer a frame to hold them together and keep the shack 6" or so off the ice. Fill them with foam and put solid ends on them.

Two words to consider..."top heavy". I like your idea, but ice out, and moving ice will be a major factor.

If I can make them a little wider than the shack  I'm hoping it will be stable.

Yeah, cool idea but don't all shacks have to be off the lakes/ponds by the 1st of April?

If you lisence it as a pontoon boat you should be good to go! Almost bought a big pontoon boat out in farmington last summer! Big platform and spot for motor!! Had plans to mount a shack onit.
Is it ice time yet???

Aluminum  really freezes and builds up with ice. Poly never builds up ice Which is why I have stayed away from Aluminum  Poly if thick enough will not puncture . If  a house boat with out motor it should not have to be registered . I really would plan to leave it out all winter but with a sudden rain or heavy snow storm to pull it off would not be an emergency.

The physics don't weigh in your favor. Snopro is on to something, build a shack on a pontoon boat....but I'm wondering why, no offense, someone hasn't thought of this before...
