Title: paying it forward
Post by: lostbrit on Jan 05, 2016, 06:10 PM
So there was a guy on this site offering some feathers for fly tying for free with postage paid by him, So I was the lucky guy who got them today.  So it's my turn to offer something for free, I have three tungsten bite indicators (the ones you attach to the end of your rod) also some new fuel lines for a strikemaster auger (I got them for my lazer pro but sold it and forgot to ship these with it) so PM or reply to this post first come first served. tight lines

Good on you for doing that. Nothing i need personally, but thats what made me want to join this community after lurking. A lot of folks willing to help.

Hmm. This is a fantastic idea for a thread though.... Everybody that receives something from another member for free, must then pay something forward to another member

I would take the bite indicators if they are still available. I also have something to put up to pay it forward ;D

GREAT IDEA for a thread Lostbrit!!  Glad the feathers made it to you, and I never would have expected anything like this to start rolling!  This is gonna be fun to see where it goes!!  May I suggest one thing??  Shipping must be paid for by the sender.  TOTALLY FREE was the idea when I sent the goose feathers.  Let's see how far this goes!

Good on you for this thread idea!!!  If this takes off, can we make it a sticky??

Big Ice Hole, did you say you had some tipups to pay forward?  I've never used them, and would like to try it out.  If the tipups are still available, I'll take one.  I've got more stuff I can pay forward!

This is awesome!!!

I can send you a tip up Raptortrapper

Awesome!!!  Thank you!!!  To pay it forward, I am offering up a full pheasant hide, minus the tail feathers, for tying flies and jigs.  It is professionally tanned, lays flat, and is in perfect condition.

Just had a thought.  If this thread continues, might be a good idea to post when something has been spoken for.  Might keep ya from getting a bunch of continued replies, and everyone would know if it was still available or if it had been taken through a PM??  Might be some sort of format to keep all this straight, but don't know for sure how to do it.  Like I said, just a thought....

Also, since we went through such a flurry there for a bit, what is still available as of now?

I have a full pheasant hide minus the tail feathers still available.

Post by: fishinagain on Jan 05, 2016, 11:20 PM
Great idea for a thread! I have seen these types of threads on a lot of boards, sadly they all end the same way.. Either some youngster finds it and sees it as free gear and takes everything, or 3-5 people just sit and trade gear back and forth. The second is against the rules here so watch out for that! Giving some stuff away to people who need it is awesome! I will sort through some stuff, in sure i have some stuff i can give to others in need!

Well Karma is a real thing, if you ice fish you need as much "good" as you can get. Also, it's not like someone is going to put up a Ion auger or something.

awesome thread!  i am not in need of anything, but i have many assorted frozen duck/goose wings and quite a few pheasant tail feathers i would love to find new homes for if people can put them to good use for fly tying or dog training.  I would also be willing to part with a large collection of jigs i no longer use.  PM me if your interested and i will post back when the items are no longer available.

Pm sent, and thanks! I will round up what I have to share and post as soon as I can.

Ok, so after giving it some thought....there are several different ways I can go with my pay it forward. I originally thought about posting a couple items, but then began thinking about items that others do not have - or do not have easy access to - or an item that you would like, but probably won't buy yourself. For instance, if you have all panfish gear, but have thought about taking a trip for walleye or pike but don't have any gear for the larger species. Another idea was items you want, but in years past certain items were hard to come by with the store shelves being sold out, maybe you are looking for a specific jig or spoon that has eluded you. (i.e. I have always wanted to try out the famous "Pink Charmer" jig, but can never get myself to hit the "order" button). Not saying I can fill any specific requests, but you never know - someone else may chime in and be able to help out...reply if you have anything "within reason" in mind. If it doesn't workout, I will choose something that I do have to share within the next couple of days. Sorry for long-winded reply.

Possible idea for a separate thread... Seems like every ice fishing region has their own unique styles of jigs and lures. What about an exchange thread where you offer up $20 of specialty jigs from your area in exchange for items from somewhere else? Does that violate any rules?

Title: Re: pay it forward jig box swap
Post by: lostbrit on Jan 17, 2016, 04:37 PM
I would like to be the first one to offer up a pay it forward jig box swap. The reason in doing this is to share your hot jigs with hopefully somebody else's hot jigs. This swap is to introduce people to what jigs are hot in their area.  The value could be $20-$40 or whatever you feel is fair. How this will work to be fair to everybody is the first one that answers back with their offer will get mine and then so on....it has to be on an open forum no PM's everyone will cover their own shipping.

Just a little write up about my jigs. I am not the owner of Maniac custom lures I just fish with them and have very good success. I love to see other people having good success as well. These are his hot glo colors. And glo vertigo jig heads. Which are very unique. They fall fast. Good action and accept a good eyeball painted on them. The other jig heads in the box are 1/32.oz bullet style. Which fish the gizzy bugs good.  I give these packages away at my companies ice fishing derbies. I love them....you'll love them too. These jigs are for trout and all kinds of pan fish. And not to forget W-A-L-L-E-Y-E!!!!

Raptortrapper received the rod/reel combo today. Thanks again.

My turn to offer something up. I just bought new traps so if anyone needs a tipup I can send you one all setup and ready to fish. Comes spooled with line and a hand tied leader(30 lb test line and a 1/0 circle hook). I will also include a steel leader with a treble hook and a small goodie bag.

If nobody wants this I will have to dig through my stuff and get something else around.

I've never used one.  I should have researched more and got an 8inch one for my 8inch auger so the basket strains the entire hole at once.  Looks like the newer ones have a ruler on the handle (so you can measure ice thickness.)

Rugburn i would be interested in the clam plate

It's not the clam plate. It's a 16" long 1" diameter solid aluminum extension that would go between a clam plate and a strike master auger. One end is bored out to 23/32" (.718") with a 1/4" cross hole, the other end is the mirror image, turned down to .714" with cross hole. Won't work with Nils augers without an adapter.  ;D
Title: Re: paying it forward
Post by: Raptortrapper on Feb 20, 2016, 08:13 PM
Not sure why there isn't anything but the adapter listed to pay forward on here??  Don't be the one to be "that guy"!

I've got some 2/0 treble hooks that I'm not going to be using any more.  Tried 2 of them, but the other 4 are still brand new.  I'll include the 2 used ones as well if anyone wants them.  They are Owner hooks, and are SUPER sharp!  I was using them for pike, but have decided to switch to 2X strong, size #1 trebles.

Geezer, thanks alot for the ice anchors just got them in the mail! And that means it's my turn... I will tie 5 ice flies custom and whoever needs them and can use them will get them. All 5 will be size 12, 2 will be tungsen bead head and the other 3 will be unweighted to use in tandem above your jig. But heres the fun part! As we all know colors used are different everywhere so ill make them whatever colors you want if I have the color materials you want. Pay it forward everyone!

I'd be interested in the flies if they are still available!

The item is a used 19 degree Vexilar transducer. I have always kept it as a spare but like I said I have never needed it so hopefully someone out there is needing one!

For my payment I'll forward one of these to a member...

Member's choice of ONE either a 12" OR 24"

LED light bar..

Either one of these should throw a lot more light than the light bar Clam sells..

The bigger 24" one has 30 LEDs and the 12" has 15..

Both are in a sealed epoxy filled aluminum channel.. I will be installing one of these in my flip over.. I'm thinking they should be pretty durable and weather proof being sealed in the epoxy.. These came out of some commercial Apple Computer display cabinets we tore out of a Micro Center store.. They are super bright, and use some juice, obviously the 24" uses twice as much as the 12"..

Which ever one you choose is 12V DC rated..

I'll test it before sending but this is slightly experimental, never tested on the hard water.. And not sure how long it will last..  It will be up to the recipient as to how you're going to wire and power it.. They do already have a few inches of wire at both ends..

I put one in the freezer and froze it, took it out and connected it still frozen and it worked like a champ!! I got about 8 hours out of my vexilar battery running both the strips above and the vex too.. So either one should work fine running as long as you charge your battery between trips...

Its got some brown spots on the table top and one small one on the case and back side of the table has some small creases that run through it from being folded.  If the shipping doesn't kill me, I'll send to the first person that replies or pings me....

Some pics of it.....

GONE, ENJOY JUSTIN!

Hah! Got the "Zombie Alert"..... Let's start early.

I just came across an Otter sled for a song. I thought it was going to be at least a "small" but it's really small. It's a mini (I think) Otter II lightly used with some re-enforcement for pulling. I'm not shipping but if there's some one in the SE WI area that can use it (great starter for someones young fisherperson) you're welcome to it.

Drop me a PM and we'll figure it out. I work in Oconomowoc and since it's your favorite price I won't travel far.

 ;D

PS - I'm going through a lot of stuff this year so there will likely be some more goodies!

GONE, ENJOY JUSTIN!

So once I get time I plan on making some panfish plastics. I thought I could Baggie up a few for guys and send them in an envelope.

So, once I get around to making some, anybody want a few!

My turn again.  I have two Genuine OEM covers for certain Eskimo Redneck Chisels.  I think these are for the Economy Chisel, CH-7.  Note that they don't fit the one-piece or two-piece chisels like the CH-11 (shown).  Happy to send each to a separate new home or both to the same.

Agronomist, your plastics do look very nice, would you share how you make them or how you got started in making them.

I started by doing some lead weight pours due to river fishing and losing sinkers. Then got into spoons and stuff, then when I was making lead heads figured I might has well make the twister tails for walleye fishing. Now I'm making all kinds of plastics, lures, and painting crank bait bodies.

Yep, been well worth it. I got a lot of molds to make plastics and lures now.

What is nice is that the lures and plastics cost cents if that to make. I think I figured it up one day and to make a lead head with a twister tail for fishing the river and lakes it cost me like $0.15-$0.20 cents. What is also kinda cool is when the plastics get all ripped up I put a new one on and throw the old ones in a tub. Then remelt the old plastics to make new ones......sometimes a guy gets a funky color with remelt a thought.

When it comes to the panfish plastics the plastisol a guy uses to make them is huge. I can't remember the exact name but it was like MF super soft. The softer the plastisol a guy uses the more action you will get with the tails/Limbs when jigging. Down side is they rip up easier.

So I have three boys. My middle one is getting into ice fishing for panfish. So I broke out two old schooley rods and reels. When I got them out, I found two smaller nice aluminum schooley type reels and a dowel.

So........I think I want to make two more schooley rods for those nice aluminum reels.

What I'm looking for is people that have some old broken HT Ice Blue or schooley artic rods. I know tips break off them pretty easy and was thinking that maybe some nice people could cut the Guides off and send them to me in an envelope if the Rod is busted/snapped.

Anyone who sends some guides to me will get some ice fishing plastics sent back towards them.

Thanks Guys.

Well, I’ve never got anything from this thread, but I’ve watched it for quite some time. It’s been quiet for longer than usual so I’ll throw something up. Have a brand new (no packaging) Kovak II Ice Master adapter for someone getting set up with a drill. Hooked it up to my drill once, but got a Clam plate for Christmas before I got to use it.

For lazer or Moras.

I have gave three things away locally this week. It really feels good helping others. Two of the things went to new icemen. 8" mora Wednesday, today a lantern for heat to one person and a hub shanty to another. I keep watching on here to pay it forward.

I cleaned out my tackle box a few weeks ago and picked out maybe a dozen gently used lures all in the boxes and put them in a gallon size ziplock bag. I added a spool of 8lb line too.  I wrote on the bag to give it to a kid and left the bag in a sporting goods store parking lot. I sat back out of sight and seen a lady pick it up and look all around and drive off.   I felt a lot of fun doing that little deed.

Paying forward in advance, I have a set of down hill skis, they are actually in great condition with the bindings still attached. Tried to sell them to no avail. Guess I could give them to a fellow iceaholic that could put them to better use than just sitting in my shed being that I already have a smitty sled and I don't ski. If you can come get them, you can have them.

I have a pair of wooden HT tip ups with a canvas case. I bought them years ago thinking I would use them but I don't. Local lake has a 2 line limit and that includes tip ups. They have been on a shelf in my office for years and are like new. I've only used them twice. I don't want to ship them so if you are close to Morrison,  IL you could come and get them.  Sorry I don't have a photo.

Ok, heres a request that I feel bad asking.  But here's my story...I teach HS Phys.Ed in a rural school....I'm starting an ice fishing unit and all that goes with it...tip ups, tip downs, dressing warm, electronics, gas augers, hand drilling, etc...I really would like to get a drill for them to use with one of the hand augers.  I'm tapped out financially and have donated all I can....I figured I at least ask (I know its a big request), but would anyone be willing to donate (pass on) a drill/ battery kit.  If not, I'd understand...big item...but if so, it would mean a lot to us.
Thanks
PM me you can help...I will be passing on

Me too. I sent him about $35 worth of tungsten and paid for shipping. Said he was giving them to his boys. Hopefully that’s the case and he’s not just scoring free gear. I haven’t even accepted a “pay it forward” item yet and honestly don’t plan on it. However, I still plan on paying it forward to help some guys out. I’m hoping he comes back on to set some things straight. Even a pack of bare hooks he doesn’t use would be enough to pass along. If not, I’ll just remember the name for the future of this thread.

Just the fact that AZbassernCO is taking out his seven-year-old fishing is enough for me. Too bad he didn’t follow through on the auger, but I’m sure once he gets back on the site he will make it right. Who knows, maybe he’s a married man and made a promise that he couldn’t keep because of his other half. Maybe money is tight? Maybe he does not have a ice  where he is at and that is the reason he has not been on the Shanty a little while. He hasn’t logged in since January 25. I don’t see anything in the rules of this thread that because you  received something that you should have to pay it forward by giving something else in return. Cool to do that, absolutely. I just don’t think it’s right to throw a guy under the bus when he might have made an honest mistake. Getting tired of reading about it frankly.  A few months ago, I had several packages ready to send out to different guys on the site and my wife said we didn’t have the money at the time. So the packages sat on the counter until we did. Life happens. Rant over. While I’m on here though I guess I could put a package of open water Lures together for  three individuals who claim them. I will put four Rapala type crank baits in a package for the first three to reply and get them out as soon as I can afford the postage. LOL

Im really hoping he just lucked out because i sent the jigs on there way this morning and that he is planning on giving something to someone else later, but it would be my fault because i didnt think to look at their profile to see they only started it just then

and it would defeat the spirit of "paying it forward" if you didn't send the item until confirmation the recipient has paid it forward or at least offered something

yeah, thats kind of why i offered up the 30+ dollars of jigs and spoons, a) because i had no need for them and b) because i got the soft plastics off of someone and figured id rather pay it forward with something rather big than something small, but hey either way theyre sent by now and i dont feel bad that they may have taken advantage of the system, but whatever, it doesnt matter, lets just keep it positive and try and be honest

I had asked a few days ago, doesn’t seem like Cabelas has anything out at the moment. However, highly recommend the $100 gift cards for $80 on eBay!

What I would like in return is a PM of sucess you have with these lures. These lures are made in America ....thats important to a few of us. I fish these lures exclusively out here in Utah and Idaho. I have very good success. Tight Lines.

Just a friendly reminder guys and gals...In a true Pay It Forward scenario, it is usually an anonymous random act of kindness. Here, we are offering up "gifts" to give away and someone will reply saying they would like them. So, when you receive the gift, a simple "thanks"; an acknowledgment, would be nice...either public or PM... after receipt of the gift. Thanks.

OK guys. I am going through a bunch of non-used jigs that I never use. These would be good for pan fishermen. Very tiny jigs. I have 92 of them. I can't send them to everyone but will send them out to 3 people. I also will be going through my Custom Jigs and Spins bodies I will send out my extra bodies only. Not the jigs. I hardly ever use any of those either. As you can see they are pretty small compared to a dime.

I'll take those if not already spoken for.

I have a pair of very nice HT tip-ups with a case I've been meaning to post on here that I have only used 1 or 2 times.

Here they are. I prefer not to ship them since it's about $18 to ship anywhere. I'm in northwest Illinois.

Thanks jbird68, appreciate the tip ups.

I am paying forward a St. Croix Legend 17” light rod (LiR17L) with “light” strike indicator and an Eagle Claw in-line reel.
Good for sight fishing or for a youngster who stands near the hole.  Prefer giving it to a young fisherperson, but first one to post a reply on the site gets it

Time to resurrect this thing! Gonna have a few things to place here. Let's start with a set of 6 Eskimo ice anchors. All but one in new and unused condition complete with plastic tip protectors (one missing). I'm keeping the bag they came in for the screws I already own.

Had to try one just to see if they were even close to the climbing screws I have and prefer. Short answer was no... They seem to be well liked by others here so they're up for grabs! Drop a post here and PM me your snail mail.

Note that they don't fit the chisel type in the pic.  They're for the cheaper models.

True! One wife, many fish.  Most recent pic is the ice fishing one from 2019.  The first one on the left is from 2007.  If you click on 'em they display bigger.

That amazing woman has been married to me for over 30 years.  She loves to go fishing and really does out-fish me on occasion.  Although she sometimes claims that it is because the capable guide gets her rod cast out first each time.   She also likes to eat fish, which we do nearly once each week, all year.  Here is a peek of our soft water setup.

Now the big question.
Does she clean um?

Nope.  We made a deal as newlyweds that she didn't have to do fish stuff and I didn't have to do diaper stuff.  Funny thing, women tend to think she got the better deal and men usually think that I did.  A true win-win.

Oh, and we had four children.

I would like to have a turn paying it forward. I would like this custom made rod that I had made 10 years ago. Go to a 12 year or under youth. So they can feel the enjoyment of having a nice graphite custom painted rod. This pole is 421/2 inches long and it has a 1/2 inch diameter tip. Excellent for fishing in the cold. No ice up.   Tight Line HH

I have a few dozen tungsten ice flies that don't quite cut the mustard for me to retail, but they will still most definitely catch fish.  I will gift to three different people, hopefully who will introduce a young one to ice fishing, or one who simply has budget constraints.  Maybe later on I'll claim something I can use.

Send a PM with name and address and I'll get some unique baits out to you ASAP.  First three will get 'em.

All of the ice flies have been claimed.  I'll see if there's anything else in my stash.  Thanks to all who started and participated in this thread.  Let's keep it going!

So nobody is gonna participate?

They look great! (especially the pink/clear minnows, scuds and pink/natural mayflies) I'd love to try a few, but don't know what I could contribute (and I'm pretty flush on gear currently).

Could probably tie up a couple jigs or flies for the pay-it-forward? I don't exactly have any "secret killer" patterns- just marabou leech jigs and some 1/80oz trout/panfish jigs that can be killer with a mealworm or waxie, and make a pretty decent dropper off a spoon for deeper water- the little jig got a 20" brown, too.

That's the spirit.  I just shipped a bunch of tungsten flies to three different guys. The postal service allowed me to use the flat envelope rate for my 6x9 padded envelope so it was super cheap to ship them.

I've got a Fenwick convertible ice rod (Fenwick Methods Ice Fishing Spinning Rod). Comes with two interchangeable rods that fit into a single handle. Very secure and the the actions are nice  Hard travel case included. Can't remember the actions, it's either 23/27" or the 25/29". The 23/27 is light/medium light and the 25/29 is light+/medium (Fenwicks description).

First come via PM...  :woot:

And yes, I'll catch the shipping  ;)2

Well that didn't take long... Rod is gone boys n girls!

Not sure what the postage is in US terms, sending postage in Canada to Canada is usually
Domestic Letter   Meter Rates   Single Stamps
Standard (S/L)
0-30g   $0.92   $1.07
30-50g   $1.30   $1.30

Sent a package from Ontario to Michigan today and it was a $1.40 Canadian

Can not fish it is too cold? or the Ice is not good enough? Build your own spinnerbaits or buzz baits.
6 Buzzbait frames, Assorted blades, all you need is the buzz spin you want to use or spinner jig, a few clevises and snaps.

I have 2 boxes of jigs that I’d like to give away to 2 different people.   I’ve been lugging them around and never seem to use them.  I think they are from a place called “Wonder Jigs”.   The ones that look white are painted on the other side.
I’d love it if they wound up in the hands of kids but that’s up to you.  Claim either the top or bottom box and send me a name and address.

I have a propane fill adapter (20# to 1#) if anyone is interested... Will ship it on my dime.  I don't care, but would be interested in some lures if anyone wants to trade... Open to panfish stuff...If that is not ok, I'll just ship to someone in need....

Top box

Thank you dearjimschmidt! To pay it forward I’m going old school. This baby has been with me since my ice beginnings. The Humminbird LCR400 ID Portable. It’s still in really good shape, and the last time I had batteries in her a year ago, she worked fine.

I know a buddy whos 8yr old could use something like this to upgrade from the schooley rods he was using his first time out.  Also go some goodies to get this thread moving again.

A few weeks ago, I met a group of first timers, they had no idea what they were doing. Besides drilling holes, helping them setup tips I gave them a bunch of pretied hooks and fluoro leaders. This is the way!

Thanks dearjimschmidt.

I think that means I'm due to offer something... I have a small double-sided waterproof silicone jig box from Amped Outdoors, holds 98 jigs for whoever could use one.

It's the one in this link that they send if you order so many jigs, but does not have the logo printed on it: https://ampedoutdoors.com/products/12-piece-energized-glow-tungsten-jig-kit

Anyone want a coupon code for $20 off a purchase of $200 or more from UpNorthSports.com? First one to use it gets it.

Code: 1123YO1575M

I ordered from them for the first time last week. Very happy with their pricing and fast shipping. Took three days to get my float suit to Maine!
