Yeah all these dead pike make no sense to me. Its not like this pond is being managed for Salmon or something similiar. Its a place known for big pike, why kill the breeders for no reason and then just leave them there? Every one of our fish was returned to the water today.
That place has gone down hill for that reason. Friggen foolish.
Sense when has Sabbattus gone down hill ?? That place has remained one of the most consistent pike fisheries in Maine. If you spend any time there they are all the same size they need to be culled. When has sabbattus been known for big pike there is so many rats in there that it needs to be culled. Remember Pike are invasive in Maine and almost all the rivers connect to some body of water that is managed for trout and salmon.
You can't tell me that pond is better now than seven years ago.
For quality fish yes. Have you seen the Bass, Perch that have come out of that pond now. Its not uncommon to catch a 2lb white or yellow perch. I have fished that pond religiously since 2007. If you liked catching 50 2lb pike then your right but it there is more 6-10lb fish in there now that a lot of the cookie cutters are getting culled. You should fish it open water right after ice out there is more big girls and boys in there now than there has been.
scott great pics. wish i coulda went. i knew a few people there. that pic of the traffic jam leaving the lake is sick. was anyone driving their trucks out there yet? where did everyone park at the boat ramp? i wouldn't worry about the pike kill. there are soooooo many in there in a crazy way it almost makes sense to cull some of them and i get it about the breeders. glad u had a nice trip.
Hey guys,Driving home now from the derby. We had a great time! Met with Sinnian and _FLAG_ from the Maine site and met some other locals and had a really nice time. Our group (Big Jim, Coldsteel, JigChaser08 and Ashley, and myself) caught somewhere around 15-20 pike on the day with the biggest being Big Jim's 8lber. Winner of the derby was 16.06lbs.
I didn't like seeing this, some guys left all of these on the ice...biggest over 30" :-((Image removed from quote.)
We fished for the "cause", none of us fish for them otherwise. It was a great time had by all, for an even better cause! The organizers make sure none of those fish are left to waste. Some will be brought to soup kitchens and the others given to lobstermen. They'll be going around today to pick up those piles, but it is a shame people can not be more responsible for themselves.
Nice job Scott and Henry. Looks like a good day
