Tastiest fish to eat
« on: Jan 03, 2015, 12:14 PM »
Ok, I have never eaten pike, crappie or bass but heard others do. As far as catching fish through ice, which fish are good to eat?  All I have ever had is perch and walleye. Just curious so if I catch any other type of fish, I can cook them for lunch or dinner.

Mine is bluegills, perch and walleyes and bass. Don't like trout,or pickerel. I think most fish would taste good if you know how to cook it. I like kris winklemans reciepts, she has a walleye chowder to die for. I had a house fire 2 yrs ago and lost the reciept, I emailed her about the reciept and she called me! I was talking to her Christmas eve she was going to print and mail every reciept for me! I told her thank you but I will get them off the computer. What a great person!

I don't think anything taste better than perch.  Can't catch them here and most certainly miss them.

Walleye and Perch are my favorites. I have had mixed results with Bass. Seems to depend on the lake they come out of. Had some that were great, and others that were a bit swampy. Bluegills are tasty too.. but a bit more work to process them.

Here is a list of my favorites in no particular order:

Pike, Walleye and Perch, (all the same family I believe)

Blue Gills and all other sun fish.

Any Bass thru the ice

All Salmon and Trout.

Whitefish, Burbot , and Smelt.

All of which can be done deep-fried, diet-seared, broiled, boiled, steamed, poached, grilled, planked, bagged and pouched.

Fish may be the perfect food :)

Would have to say perch and gills tie for #1 followed by walleyes, pike and crappies.  Pike are great in the 24-28 inch range.  My 32 incher wasn't as good.

Salmon or Steelhead on the grill in tin foil with lemon juice and onions.
Walleye, Pike, and Bass.

Perch,Walleye,and Bluegill.
Fried mostly but love the baked walleye, and then sometimes I like to take blue gill and make them like the Salmon patties are made.

Rock Bass
But don't quote me on that. I have a drinking problem, I keep running out of beer. I've always been a little bit crazy, but its kept me from going insane.

I like most of them, but would rate perch as my top one, followed by walleye, then pike.
I usually don't get on the ice before bass season closes, but just a tip for those who dont like bass; cut the fillets in serving size pieces,  and split the thick pieces in half so nothing is over 1/2" thick.  Soak in a bowl of milk overnight,  then fix like any other fish. You may never toss back all your bass again! I used to dislike the strong flavor until I tried this. Someone told me a Canadian guide does this, then mixes it in with walleye and none of his clients can tell the difference.

For me, Perch, Crappie, bluegill and rock bass.
I met a CO on St. Clair once who was surprised I keep rockies. He said most guys he talks to toss them back.
They don't know what they are missing!

Any fish thru the ice will be good to eat.  Fried gills or perch are tough to beat.
BUT - blackened pike tacos are unbelievable!!!
Clean the pike into 5 fillets- youtube it for a how to.
Cut the filets into bite size pieces, after skinning.
This helps get rid of the bones.
Blacken in a hot cast iron pan with spices and put into tacos.
They are just awesome!!
Good luck and be safe out there ~ Sturg
