Not to hi jack and I feel like I should know this so at the risk of sounding silly.  Is a cat and a bullhead different? I thought it was a species of.  I know, I should probably google it.   ( I don't do much catfishing but manage to get into some bulls softwatering for eyes)  Sorry to ask the proverbial dumb question.

yes several different kinds of bullheads and several kinds of catfish

really chris, they are that sensitive? hmm. do flashers go on sale in the warmer months? or are they outrageously priced year round?
Well the FL 8 is Vexilars base model and it goes up from there. That unit will pickup depths up to 120 ft. More than plenty enough for mostly any inland lake around here. I think I picked up mine on sale for 260 but they are usually 290.00. Vexilar is one make, Marcum is the other. There are always debates which is better, but they are overall the same exact thing. You can turn the gain up on the unit and pickup just about anything suspending in the water but yes, they are dang sensitive. You can watch your jig bounce up and down, get to learn individual fish species when they show up on the screen, with the way they act, get an accurate reading on depth, lake bottom composite, weeds, etc. I know a half of a peanut will even show up as it sinks to the bottom. I would say people were cheating too before I owned one but now won't fish without one. Absolutely hands down the most important tool an ice angler could own!

Go to Vexilars web site, sometimes they have factory reconditioned ones but I don't know the price. I bought a used one for my son and I paid 100.00 shipped.
Once you use one you are hooked.

I wish this would of came up back during duck season. I gave a buddy an older red screen flasher. It was for a boat but you could of made an adapter to set the transducer flat in the water. I tried it out and it didn't have gain or anything, but it showed depth, larger lures or minnows, and fish. I would of gave it to ya DH. I don't think my friend is doing anything with it. Maybe I can get it back and bring it up next trip.

Diehard, I am here to help take some of the heat off  of you  for keeping small fish. You said you keep 7-8" fish, well I keep smelt that are even smaller than that. And YES when you batter fry them & serve  em up to family & friends they love  em !  As long as your not wasting them or violating any rules ,who cares what anybody else thinks. Catch em & eat em, & enjoy life ! By the way, NICE BUCK! on your other post.Keep the pics coming, I love them(reminds me of  me 30 years ago!)

Love it!!!

Hey, when I'm on a schedule and I'm on the verge of having enough fish for one or two full dinners, fish that I'd normally toss back go into the 5galbucket without second thought.  ,my brother in law quotes me all the time : "he'll eat"

I think everyone has gotten to those fish in the bucket where you ask "Why did I keep this???"  But they all taste great no matter what the size.  I take my dad fishing a couple of times every year.  He fishes so little anymore that he has forgotten what a nice bluegill looks like and he throws just about every one he catches in the live well.  At the end of the day I take all of the fish home and fillet them, then drop off the fresh fillets at mom and dads house the next day.  Any annoyance I may have had cleaning his 5" gills is long gone the next time we talk and he raves about how great they were to eat.
There he stands, draped in more equipment than a telephone lineman, trying to outwit an organism with a brain no bigger than a breadcrumb, and getting licked in the process.  ~Paul O'Neil, 1965
