I don't know how thier going to work. It's a free spinning reel. Looks like they'll go down as fast as you can back reel or strip line off. I guess you could loosen the nut enough so that it'll freefall. I usually fish no deeper than 20' though.

Those are the Black Betty reels. $40. They just also came out with the Black betty 6061 and they are a beautiful reel. Not quite 7 ozs and free spool and drag. I have had mine on order for awhile and hopefully mine and others will be getting them next week. But these are $100! ;D

I just got in my 2 eagle claw setups.   Never used anything but spinning.   Any advise?

Actually, none of the Fly reels are designed to opeerate like Spinning reels (free-drop lures), unless, of course, you are using really heavy lures.  Their main function is to prevent "lure-spin" when the lure is presented to the fish.  Hand stripping line off the reel is just a very  minor inconvenience.  You'll be surprised at how much more effective your tiny ice jigs will be when they don't spin in front of the fish!

Going to pick up my new T 7 27" medium fast tip and was thinking about matching it up with a 6061. What say u guys for putting one on a bigger rod like that?

The EagleClaw and BlackBetty 6061 does have a free spool feature allowing it to free fall like a spinning reel...I pick up my 6061 in the morning and cant wait to play with it....

I love mine . I put to the test on a float rod for steelhead.  Pics prove it. Had a 36"ml Austin custom rod built for it. 1 more week till ice.

How did you guys spool these up? I had to get a Black Betty. I ran several yards of tip-up line on as a backer, and then maybe 60 yards of 2# on. As I used it yesterday, I kept noticing the mono was "digging" into the backing, or it had some "tight spost, or loose spots". I'm thinking of going to backer with maybe a 3-4' leader. Any thoughts?
