To me, I saw a lot of weird ice this year. Some really, REALLY thick ice too. I keep an extension on my kdrill just because I think the things are kinda short, but there were a few times where I was glad I had it. On my ride to work I noticed Stevens Pond in Manchester completely iced out over the weekend. I know it's a tiny pond in Manch, but I was a little surprised to see that. I see some other ponds opening up pretty quickly. So what do you think about the ice out situation in general? Is it going to be late, or is it going to be about normal? We were driving trucks on the big lake last weekend and drilling 25" of ice. What are all the factors involved? There is going to be an immense amount of liquid coming from up north when the 4' of snow that is still in the woods melts. Will that make the big lakes break up quicker?
Yes, I am the jackwagon that posts an ice out thread the day hardwater season closes.

I'll tell you this much, I was driving on and drilling through 30+ inches of ice a week ago, Saturday, that same lake had 15" of good hard black ice and 4 to 6" of corn ice, when I headed out at 5:45 AM, the shore was tight, when I got back to the truck stop 7 pm, the shoreline was open along osteoporolake if the ramp...it goes fast this time of year, rain and daytime temps will be a big part of the determining factor, add a few wide days and your gonna need a boat.

My guess for Winni ice out is April 24.
-
I feel like this year had been a very weird winter for ice because I feel like southern NH never got a good freeze, while everything north of Concord and in the Lakes Region did. So I think ice out in southern NH will be pretty soon, but the larger lakes may take a bit longer. I was fishing out of Sanders Bay yesterday and truck were still driving on and off and shoreline was still great.

I’m thinking May... I hope I’m wrong.

So that's the later side of average but still what I would consider fairly average. I hope you are right.
I’m thinking May... I hope I’m wrong.
And I hope you are wrong also!

2019 ?
Interesting.
-
Massy opened up over the weekend no ice in sight so southern nh i would call ice out as far as the big lake i'd guess last week in april. Fingers crossed its sooner.
-
Already got one casting Saturday in madbury. Nice to be able to whip some crank baits out there

Fished 11" of ice on Pleasant Lake last Sunday. Today I did a drive by and it's ice clear.

I like your approach! Fish seem to like a confident man. Or is that the ladies? I dunno, I can't seem to catch either.
-
How about a lake that never gets ice out 😭

It pains me to think this way, but with the cold nighttime temps isn’t it probably making ice each night? I realize it should still be a net loss, but we really need some warm rainy nights coming up.
-
This was the first time in my life ice fishing on the lake I have lived on from my 4 wheeler with 10 inches, shoreline locked up and ice out with in three days of that. Both weird and scary. I don't think the lake was ever really safe this year. It gained and lost ice several times since the second week of December. I'm in Southern NH.

Ice out is the fish sounding retreat.

You’ll be getting your wish zwiggles...60’s Sunday with rain overnight!
That will surely hasten things!

I know...may have been the "boston" forecast. still some melting temps going on in the lakes region. Nothing earth shaking though...
-
Saw a lot of black ice today in Alton Bay and South side of Rattlesnake Is. near Ames Farm. Maybe as soon as a week or ten days for that part of Winni. However forecast for the week is cold nights.

I was all over that area today. North end of squam, center harbor area, weirs, glendale, ellacoya. The area near moultonborough was cold and lots of ice. The marina i fished near weirs had skim coat ice around the docks. North end squam still had deep snow. Saunders bay area and around governors island bridge looked close it has that color. Glendale still has alot of ice but colors changing. I think that area will be troll worthy by the end of the week. Meredith bay has the look too. I fished 3 areas on winni and several streams. Everything looks nice in the rivers clear water nice flow good pools. No fish to be had. Didnt even see one.

Update on a few lakes
Joe Sylvia (Clement) is open with a small amount of skim ice down by the church. The ramp is rough but ok to use. North Shore rd is loaded with pot holes and muddy
Drew Lake is open with a small amount of ice near the parking area (ramp is open). Also some ice down by the dam
Deering is about 75% open. Some ice blew into the ramp but should be gone this week

Take a peek at the website cams, all its gonna take is a big sneeze from mother nature to open up the main lake...some of the sheltered bats may hold on a bit but the snake eyes cam has her ready to toss her cookies.

It’s quite uncanny that this year’s thick ice now looks like it’s on its last legs...Mother Nature plays by her own rules. I predict an ice out in the next 7-10 days. Of course, the “traditional” ice out is declared when the Mount can run its normal route.

Yes definitely by her own rules, the lake I walked out on just a week ago had 30 yards of open shore, like I said in my post, it had lost 10" in a week , but still was 15 solid and 5 or so corn, this time of year, it gets worked on from both sides...at least up north you don't get sea breezes, yesterday it went from mid 60's to low 40s with a wind shift on shore..brrrrrrr.
-
cool post on the historic dates...if you look at it and average all of them out, ironically we are basically right on pace or average...right around the week of the 21st April it seems...despite me feeling like this was some of the nest ice (up north) that I've seen since I can remember...still looks like ice out will be just about on point. either way, hit the res this past weekend and we managed 8 Lakers and a nice salmon...so, looking forward to open water in front of my house soon.
-
Another update, as of Sunday 7th: Turkey is a strong sneeze from going out. Hopkinton/Elm Brook/Stumpfield is entirely open (no idea if the gate's unlocked), Gregg still had a week left, unless the wind gets up. Merrimack river in Concord was 41 in the main flow, 45 in the oxbow and 49 (at about 4:00) in the backwater. The gods smiled, and I got 7 LM to 2.25#.
