1/2 inch impact on ice auger?
« on: Dec 16, 2017, 02:35 PM »
I am wondering if a 1/2 inch impact driver would work on an ice auger?.

impact not needed - regular drill - no hammer - smooth and silky

True, but I can make better use of an impact on other projects the rest of the year.   Bad idea?

Hmm, hadn't thought of that.   I already have the impact, but no ice on lakes to try my idea.   Thought maybe someone had tried this ,and could enlighten me

I believe a drill hammers, but an impact momentarily stops ,  more of a rattle . No up and down motion involved?.

I think it will take some time to bore a hole with an impact. When it is impacting, the rotational speed slows down considerably, but this is just an opinion, you'll have to try it for a true test.

An Impact driver is going to ruin your auger blades/head. The impact starts to "jump" once you get resistance so it can break loose a nut. Do that with an ice auger and it's going to "jump" your ice auger pounding the blades into the ice verse Turing and shaving. That will either cause the blades or blade mount to lose its pitch(bend the blades or blade mount outta wack) and render the auger worthless from there on out.

You need a constant turning pressure to shave ice.
