Quick trout trip NW Ontario
« on: Jan 22, 2012, 04:30 PM »
Went out this morning for a quick snowmobile trip to a local trout lake with a buddy who has to work nights. Met up at 0730 and got to lake at 0830. Would have been quicker except I got bogged down on a severe hill. Friggin gutless 340 trying to lug a fat 270 ::)
Within minutes my buddy iced a nice laker of about 22". A while later he hooked into another small one which he released. I hooked into a nice 20" that took some teasing before he bit my jig. Buddy got one more about 18" and I played with one for ten minutes on my flasher who would nip but not bite. Left at noon and was back by one. Nice way to spend a morning.

Here is what I came home with

First trout trip of the season and I did not get skunked ;D
Can't beat that.
Regards,
Glen

No whitefish in that lake. Some monster pike occasionally. Never seem to get any large trout but the ones like above are plentiful.
I have to travel a little further afield for the big ones and for the whitefish.
This was just an easy trip to kill a morning.

Hey Simon,
Clytie has been driven on for weeks. I haven't been on myself yet but Mark's buddy lives there. If you want to make a date for whiteys just let me know what days are good for you. I still haven't used my Fatfish yet and that will be a good spot I think.

Nice laker. Gotta love being so close to fish like that! I'll be on LOTW this Saturday looking for giant lakers.

What are the snow conditions on lakes in the Kenora region Glen?

There is next to no snow on the portages. Out on the ice you can expect from 2 to 6" with occasional areas of deeper drifts of snow from what I have experienced the last two weeks.

Should be good ice conditions there as well?

There was 16" of ice on the trout lake I was on and they are usually much later to freeze up. LOTW had 16" two weeks ago. That week of -30 temps probably solidified everything a bit more. You can drive trucks all over the traditional road areas now I would say.
