Was thinking a bout giving Dief a try this season. Where are some of the communal fishing spots where a guy can go and cut his teeth on. I'll be travelling from Saskatoon. From what I heard there is Coteau Bay, the trout farm, and the spillway are good areas to try. What is a good starting depth when looking for perch and walleye on Dief?

Post by: saskbucks on Nov 21, 2018, 12:17 PM
In the winter I've found walleye in the 25 FOW range.  Perch can be anywhere between 15-35 FOW, but not exclusively.  If you can find large flat areas of around 20 FOW, I've found perch to like those areas.  The lake is so big, I would invest in a flasher so you can explore.  Be mobile and move until you find them.

With only a few inches of ice on the lake in some spots I would definitely give it a lot more time. If Sask Watershed decides to let water out of the dam, that ice will be crazy unstable.

5 inches in Pumphouse bay (not at the back, half way in).
8+ inches at the back of Coteau (middle of the mouth of irrigation bay).
Landed one nice walleye, had a bunch of pike and perch on cam that wouldn't commit.

The pumphouse bay has 6 to 8 inch of ice tonight 20 yards from shore. The big lake is almost covered with ice plus half an inch of snow.

i cant speak for the fish farm but i suppose it would be still open water. I did venture around a few bays closer to the dam ....most were only half froze ...if that. Warmer further south by fish farm i suspect hope this helps. You could always call Twyla at the fish farm and ask

The lake is not accessible at this location during the winter by automobile. The closest point of access might be at the boat launch at the Mistussinne Resort Village. I'm not sure if there are any heaves between Mistussinne and the areas you want to get to.
Title: Re: Diefenbaker Lake 2018-2019
Post by: Wissel on Feb 06, 2019, 12:00 PM
Thanks Burbot Master!  Too bad we can't drive on the lake at the Douglas provincial park access ... we are from a lab at the U of R and that's where we launch our boat in the summer.  Do you know if we'd still be able to drive close to the lake and walk on with sleds at the Douglas access? We could try driving from Mistussinne but as you say there might be ice heaves.

Is this where the boat launch is at Mistussinne?  Has anyone fished near Mistussinne lately and know how deep the water is?  We want to collect water samples from as deep a spot as possible so if there are deep spots near Mistussinne we might try there ... our point closer to Douglas was 28.5 m (94 feet.)

Post by: Burbot Master on Feb 06, 2019, 03:05 PM
The last time I was at Douglas you could still drive to the launch. It is the access from the launch that makes it hard to get on the lake with a vehicle.
There are numerous sandbars out from Mistussinne, but if you search around you should be able to find a deep spot. Your location of the Mistussinne launch is correct.

This lake is sketchy at the best of times, lots of gas pockets making thin ice, I would suggest having someone with you that knows the lake well, even then it can be scary, here's an example of what's on the lake

DAMN!.....Well that would definitely cause a new level of puckering up. A couple years ago, walking back to Danielson from the flats, I hit one of those damn things and only went down to my waist. I was fortunate to throw myself forward before I went in any deeper. Bad on my part on not watching the ice closer and keeping my head up.
Thin ice and open water have no forgiveness!

Finally made it out to Diefenbaker to look for walleye today. It was very slow all afternoon, and it was good that the ice was nearly eight inches less than at Blackstrap, because we put down a lot of holes. The fish on camera included a few pike and a huge burbot that spit the hook halfway up. A perch swam up to one of our baits and established itself as the biggest ever seen by the observer.

The evening saw a walleye invasion at the 11 foot depth. All were in the 2 lb category. Static baits were of no interest to them. Only aggressive jigging with pink spoons seemed to work. In the end three were caught, one was lost at the hole, and a number of others did their best to interrupt our mooseburger dinner.

Had to love the weather!

great day on Diefenbaker Saturday with fellow shanty members saskbucks and twistedhook and 2 buddies set up in a not so populated part of the lake. the fishing was off and on all day but the rods were bending and the flags a tripping.with a mix of pike walleye, burbot, and whites making the trip topside. and many more non committing as seen on a couple cameras. thanks to the boys for a great on ice fish fry and deer sausage very tasty. we all had had a great time. hopefully a couple more trips in the next 2 weeks. oh yeah congrats to bert for another huge pike good job.

yet another great day on the lake yesterday we were all back out for round 2. started out earlier than last week as we thought we had maybe missed the early walleye bite by about an hour or so. saskbucks and a friend were already drilling when i arrived. started seeing marks and shortly after a friend was into a walleye. and then i was hooked up on a huge whitey biggest i ever caught. more marks were coming and going throughout the next couple hours. with no more fish making the trip up at prime time. the rest of the crew showed up. fellow member twistedhook and a couple more friends and we all fished the area pretty heavily the rest of the day marking catching and seeing on camera. walleye, pike, whitefish and of course burbot were caught again. another highlight was a friend hooking into a big I'm guessing 15lb pike that bit off his jig the bottom of the hole after an epic fight with many runs on 6lb mono with no leader at least we got to see him. nice work Gerard. fun day for sure. and thanks to Dave for the lunch on the ice. hopefully we can still get in a couple more trips. 1 walleye, 1 whitefish, and 2 burbots for me.

the fishing was slow on Friday for saskbucks and myself as we ventured to a different area of the lake. we did manage 1 walleye, 1 whitefish 1 small pike, and a jumbo perch for our efforts. lots of whiteys on camera and some walleyes. tons of tiny perch filling the screen on most holes. great day and great weather and of course another fish fry. thanks saskbucks. heading back out today on a solo trip somewhere possibly last trip to deif depending on the outcome.

Still trucks on ice on Saturday. Ice is being eroded already. Two of us fished Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning, and iced 6 whitefishes, 1 each of walleye and perch. Missed a bit more half way, and those tug like whitefish.

Hi! I'm wondering if someone could tell me the approximate date when most of the ice has melted on diefenbaker.

I'm from the University of Regina and writing my thesis on winter conditions in lakes around SK, so that's why I'm hoping to catch the approx. ice-off date, which would be when 2/3 of the lake has melted or the first day when its completely melted to go with a boat. I'm grateful for any reply and update as soon as the ice melts! Thanks!

Are you wanting to know for this current year(2019)? Or past years?

Ice is going fast, might be able to walk on if the edges aren't too rotten...
A truck went thru yesterday by Riverhurst 😳
