I'd like to know what everybody thinks is the best jigging rod for panfish. I'm looking at picking up some new rods and can't make up my mind.
Polar ice,Ice blue, signature rods,or maybe somebody's come up with one homemade? Give me some feedback!

Any light action rod works fine,I take a small spring from
a pen or a transmission valve body & attach it to the end
of my rod for very light biters.Good luck

Very sensitive, quality components. I've purchased or used most brand name rods and these are a fine rod. From panfish to lake trout, many weights and lengths to choose from.
I have a fishing buddy who is making a few of his own rods this year...... can't wait to checkout his custom builts.
Always looking for new toys to try.

It all depends, if you are fishin easy fish it doesn't matter to much. Yea those $ expensive rods are ok, but won'T work a lot of times on presured or pickey fish. Here is a example, 100+ people fishing for panfish and only i guy catching fish
Naturally you have to check it out and see what he is using,...... right?
OK a 12 inch micro-light rod with ounce rated line.
On tough lakes i use a 12 inch micro shack rod with 1lb. test line.
Some of these presured lakes are almost impossible to catch a gill.
You can't can'T catch them in open air unless you keep the hole full of crushed Ice. We have seen gills come up to hole, turn side ways and take a peek up the hole
If you fish from a shack you must keep it dark.
My shack rod cost $6 5 years ago, and i bought a long one (16 incher) last year for $8.95.

Hey Crappieloo,
Who makes those micro rods? Where can I get some? I take it that the shorter the rod the more sensitive action especially for those finicky biters. I see your from Wayne Cty. Did you ever fish Long Pond? I've heard ther are some nice gills in there. Did you fish the Pac much last year and did you do very good? I've never fished it but maybe this year.

hey perch buster... where does he get the components to make his own rods and is it a very hard task? You could customize the rod to your own needs almost perfectly!!!! Not a bad idea

Preacher man, They are made in CNY and the Company name is Current Rods and they are real sweet and hard to find. I'm from Wayne County New York.
I'M guess your from PA
Have fished long pond ( both of them ) in NY.
Am itchin to fish the Pac in PA.
BTW the 12 incher rocks big time i never had a breakoff with 1lb. test mono unless it was my fault. ( e.g. line touching hot lantern)

Yeeepppp, ol crappieloos right. Everytime I cant catch no feesh, I just puts away my $50 dollar poles and gets out my wally world rod. Onliest way I can catch dem feesh.
Oh come on crappieloo. 12" rods are not the only way to catch fish. Im quite sure that expensive rods arent either. Sensitive tackle is sometimes the only way to catch presured fish. Ive fished lakes that were highly pressured and my expensive rods worked fine.
Anyway, as much as I love Thorne Bros, they dont make the best panfish rod. Cabelas IceXML 24" Lite is very nice panfish rod. Very fast tip, Excellent sensitivity. Just a terrific rod for catching all species of panfish.

So here we go again on the size of your rod!
Look , I'm going out to buy a couple of new rods this year, and my BIG question is , do I get the micro lite that has the action of a wet noodle or a standard Ulite. The plan is to get down to 2lb oe even 1lb and most of the fish will be in 20 to 35 fow. and the species will be Perch. Gander MT. has their St.Criox out on the floor starting at about 20.00. Will the mico noodle have enough hook setting power at 35 fow so I'm not loosing fish. I don't fish inside so a short rod is not really needed. The rod I looked at is a 24"UL but they do have a lighter style and I'm just not to sure what would be the best. Or should I get both.

Mr.Seaguar i agree with you
We got a tough situation over here( tough fishin').
The 100+ fishin story is true, and happened during the day time( which i'M not to good at)
This guy had mid priced 24'' rods and was frustrated like the rest of us cause of the no bite , which is the norm on this lake.
Then he says thats it , and pulls out this micro 10 to 12 inch wispy $5.00 rod with 1lb. test and sits right on top of the hole and sight fishs, and is the only guy cathing them
I have a flip over shack and use a 18'' ST. Crox Artic angler for my big$ rod, and about 4 other mid$ 16 to 18'' rods, but the most fish come off of the 12'' shack rod
I really can'T use a rod longer than 18'' inside my shack( no room) thats why they call them Shack rods.
And they are hard to find, even here where there made.

cold feet, don'T make a mistake and buy a short rod for fishin that deep. Also you don'T need a micro light for that deep, it will be nothing but a pain in the butt. A 24'' lite rod would work good, and a 24'' med. rod for jiggin heavier hardware to get you back down quicker would be good.
I think the short micro wouldn't work for most people, you have to remember i fish in 8 to 15fow (mostly 10fow) and a lot of times 2 to 5 ft. down.

12" rods are for sight fishing like Crappieloo said. Its so you can have your hand right by your head in order to set the hook quickly. Wet noodle rods cost me more fish than they catch. Also harder to jig precise movements. And see hits. Honestly, I have never seen a rod which fits my fishing as perfectly as the IceXML 24" Light. It might not be fore everyone, but I love it. I have also used Thorne Bros SweetThing and its really nice. Berkley has some Genz signature series which are OK. As much as I hate to admit it, I have a buddy who uses a Frabill weird handle rod and it works great for him. He catches fish really well. If I ha to go buy a rod and didnt want to spend a bunch, Frabill would be my choice. They have fast action and are sensitive.
Cold Feet, you shouldnt need 1# line for perch. I have seen lineshy perch and flourocarbon was my answer. Thats all I use for the most part. I use 4# seaguar for all my panfish fishing. I fish some highly pressured areas and have good success with it. Very low stretch so fishing in 35' will not be a problem. Although, in that much water, if you use light jigs it will take a while for your bait to get back down.

Well I did it. Tonight the wife and I went to Gander Mt. and she bought me 2 new St.Croix Premier 28UL rods one for me and one for my son. She also bought me a couple packs of Marmooska jigs, a spool of 2lb Seaguar flor line and the best HT came out with a telescopic polar skimmer it must be built for the fat guys who can't bend over to clean out their holes. It extends to 36" and if you use it right it could be used as a snow wedge to launch Perch at your neighbors hut. Its quite a sight but will come in handy. Now all we need is ice!

Sounds like you did all right. I can personally vouch for Seaguar. Marmooskas arent bad either. 80% of my fish are caught on a marmooska in size 12 or 8. If StCroix Ice rods are as good as their summer tackle, they are a darn fine rod. St Croix is all I use in the summer.

Hey Cold Feet,
I picked up one of those tele. skimmers too! I was out in western pa. and stopped at petersons outdoors and picked up one there. I also picked up a new HT polar excape ice shelter. If you like using marmooska jigs, Petersons is one of the largest dealers of marmooska jigs. Check them out on the web!

Hey Tony, I've been hearing alot about those Yad rods - where can you buy them? I heard Gander Mountain, but the nearest to me is an hour away, I haven't been able to get there yet. Are they online anywhere?

TONY B;
Not trying to exchange written blows........ I just beg to differ.
I enjoy ice fishing and just like to get my monies worth when buying equipment. I don't mind paying more if I get more.
The South Bend Mighty Mite that I purchased left me with a lasting impression.... not to try another. The blank stopped at the handle, cheap foam handle, 3 small eyes. as well as a metel end eye (which had a microburr.... took me part of a trip to figure why my line was braking).
Had some troubles with HT's as well as other brands.
I realize that the fish aren't impressed with the cost of my TB (I currently have the Deadstick), but I am impressed with the quality of this rod as well as it's intended "special use" ( in combination with the Rockin Reel this is like setting a trap). I've been deadsticking for quite awhile and was unable to find a decent rod for this type of fishing.... noodle rods show strikes well but no back bone for the fight. Oops... started drifting....
My point is that I personally would rather pay for something that will last a few seasons, instead of being the comsumers we are bread to be.
I'm starting to realize that "building your own" is looking like the way to go as everyones perfect rod don't cut it for eveybody else.
BTW.... are these YAD rods availible in the Midwest?

Tony B, Do those YAD rods come smaller then 24''. I desperetly need 2 or 3 14'' to 18'' rods to replace my broken ones.
Is that tackle shop M.M. or Brewerton Sports?
