I found plenty of safe ice on very large lakes in the NW corner yesterday.  No to 10” but plenty safe by anyones standard.    Today I was in Hartford and a family was ice skating in the middle of weathersfield cove!   If you can’t find ice now find a new hobby.  I’ll be fishing tomorrow in The Littchfield hills if anyone wants to join me let me know.

Wethersfield Cove locked up yesterday.I strongly doubt that the ice is safe yet.I hope that family skating does not have suicidal tendencies.Went by today and the edges were open on the parking lot side.Probably in a few days it will be fishable.Good luck and stay safe everyone!!!

I checked a small pond in the SE corner today on my way home. About an inch of ice, not enough to walk out on without cracking. A big spot that was open yesterday because of the wind had locked up though. Small ponds in the SE corner might be good for the weekend but not quite yet. I will probably head a half hour or so north on Saturday.

Nah, just stating a fact. The Cove gets pretty busy once there’s ice. Easy on, easy off and people catch well there.

Stopped by Broad Brook Mill Pond this morning - even tho there's a "thin ice" sign - walked my 194 lb fat @ss out 5-6 feet and its pretty solid.

Don't ride around with my auger so cant give a thickness report - bottom line things are freezing up nicely.    The cold coming in Friday nite---Sunday AM should add nicely.

Nice, this isn't too far from me and I didn't even know it existed haha...I'll have to add it to my list of local spots.

I've checked several of my favorite spots the last two days. Have not seen more than 2", mostly less. Today's predicted temps are 40-ish, not good. I'm pretty bold but will not be going until the weekend cooldown.

Had lots if cars slowing down as they passed.  Ice fishing at night is the best.

Sure is. Hard to beat a cold, calm night with the ice singing.

It’s a no-go at Crystal (Ellington).  A very small patch of thin ice the daredevils are willing to set up on near the ramp and everything else super thin with open spots.

There was a post earlier this week on one of the CT fishing FB pages of a guy pulling a salmon out of Crystal...It looked like they were on maybe 2-3" of clear ice.  Hard to tell because it was so clear, but looked damn sketchy to me.  Not surprised it would be all but gone after the past 2-3 days.

Good point about the last two warm days. Other than possibly in the northwest and northeast hills the ice probably took a hit. Smart money says give it a couple cold days on most lakes. Some places might be ok, but be really careful.

Yeah I was going to go scout this afternoon, but don't think I'll bother around here...I'm not sure if be able to get on safely most places I was going to go until tomorrow, based on how much ice I've lost on the backyard pond.

Welcome aboard Bassassin. Just so you know, people are usually pretty tight lipped about pike spots on here, as there are so few of them in CT. I have the same dilemma though: I live in the opposite corner of the state from most of the early ice spots (or ANY ice spots in some years).

Re: Winchester, trying to balance the art of being helpful to those who may want to bring their kid out, and not piss off the IceShanty OG’s with condition reports and measurements, I’ll just share a pic of Winchester this morning and indicate that at my comfort level and with a long season ahead, I did not go out past the launch after spudding, and no one else was on the lake. Spudded around a few other lakes this morning and my general vibe was that the past two days opened up some spots, specifically areas with some current. Still enjoyed a morning outside and will hope the shiners stay another few days. Looks like it’s game on soon and the deep freeze will spread the opportunities out across the state so no one lake is too pressured.
