has anybody ever caught a goby ice fishing ??? ??? ???
-
I have caught them in early winter just prior to solid ice, I cracked a small hole in the ice crust and brought out the ice rods and was jigging my marmish along the peir and bang, goby after goby

Bobberstop has on green bay! :D ugly little sucker...goby werent none too cute either!

no, i have never caught a goby while ice fishing. i live on lake erie, which is infested with the round goby.
if i ever did catch one, that first seagull to "pick over" my spot when i left, would be very happy.

They haven't ventured up to my neck of the woods (yet)... they' get a quick heel to the head if I caught one though...

;D you got that right.

are gobys an invasive species? theyre bug eyed minnow looking with larger fins, right?
-
They are considered an invasive species around here - The St. Lawrence River and a few of the inland lakes. Thanks to the ballast tanks of those freight ships and then to unaware fishermen that transported them inland.

they are a very good food source for bass. the smallmouth tear them up.

i only caught one through the ice and that was last year and saw another guy catch one and thats it.

hehheh, not to be a spoilsport, but that is actually a shorthead sculpin, common to some lakes and slow streams, they are an indicator of good water quality, most people just call them "gobies" because that's what other people call them, and those people looked them up and went with the first thing they found that looked like it. (gobies are the saltwater only relatives of the sculpin family) trout and other predators (not only fish) love 'em.
yeah, i'm a fish geek. ;)

Never thru the ice.

The 'goby' is an invasive specie in my neck of the woods. The great lakes and other surrounding inland lakes are just infested with them and the problem just does not seem to be getting better at all. #1 bait in these waters is a goby imitation, and yes, the smallies just love' em :D

I've never caught one through the ice. While they are indeed an invasive species, they are not as bad for fishing as everyone thought they would be.
I have cleaned perch with them inside
I have cleaned walleye with them inside
I know guys that have cleaned bass with them inside
Most game fish are eating them and are getting nice and fat, even more than normal
And the best thing about gobies ?? Their favorite food (about 75% of their diet) is bass fry !! :D

I guess that's where you don't see the problem. We like our bass around here :)....and yes, they do provide as a main food source for bass which waters have been unlucky enough to have the invasion spread.

we have a huge population around here, they had a kids tourny at a local park and for a few hours caught like 700. We fish same area in the winter and even fall and never catch any. BUT those da#m gobi eat all the new born fish and mess-up fish beds. There are a bunch of gobi lures out on the market also that work good here, swim baits for bass, hot n tots for eyes.

Yes, I have caught them through the ice. Port Bay, New York. This summer and fall cut them in to strips, caught perch on them.

in michigan that would be a no-no even if they are dead.
