Yesterday's AND Today's Catch (updated 3/11)
« on: Feb 20, 2007, 11:08 AM »
Here's a couple pics of the steelhead (rainbow trout) I got yesterday (2/19). The wind was blowing at 30+ MPH. It was a slow day and this was the only fish put on the ice. There were 10 other guys fishing around me also with only one other flag - the guy broke the fish off.

That fish is now cut up and in the brine waiting to be turned into jerky !!

Nice looking fish. So that's how you anchor your slammer to the ice. Why a space between the slammer and the snow? Just curious. Did the anchors bottom out on the ice?

Nice looking fish. So that's how you anchor your slammer to the ice. Why a space between the slammer and the snow? Just curious. Did the anchors bottom out on the ice?

Look at the docks on the left in the first picture behind the Slammer Tip-Up. Do you see any snow built up around the poles up to the docks? Now look at the docks to the right. LOTS of snow built up because the docks go down to the ice. By lifting the Slammers up off the ice, the wind is allowed to blow under them and no snow or slush can build up.

The Slammers aren't anchored to the ice. The "Slammer Stilts" or "slush guards" just go down into the slush that's built up from snow being blown over the open hole and forming a mound. I had to lift it up higher than I had it at first to avoid any build-up. It's not that often that I get out on days with the winds at 30+ MPH.

The pics above were taken about a half hour after I cleared the snow and slush build-up down to bare ice and adjusted the Slammer up higher. This was after the first build-up pictured below.

The Slammer works great. Slammer Tip-Ups and Slammer Tip-Up Kits come with detailed instructions, illustrations, and directions on how to rig and adjust them properly so they release when a fish bites and you don't break your rod. You may want to check out the Team Iceshanty Members Only Specials.

Yesterday's AND Today's Catch (updated 2/25)
Started off EARLY yesterday morning (2/24) at White Lake for steelhead with a few buddies.

Fishing was SLOW but it gave me a chance to get some pics of the custom novelty "hockey stick" Slammer Tip-Ups I made. I tried wood that narrow years ago and found it to be too flimsy and bendable, but hockey sticks are laminated and generally made of extremely strong wood.

Cooper TNT Pro Model Slammer Tip-Up

Titan TSM/22 Model Slammer Tip-Up

After a few hours of NO ACTION on White Lake, we headed south to Muskegon Lake off of 2nd Street for walleye and pike in the 25+ MPH winds. NO walleye to be seen but we did ice one eater northern.

We didn't get hit too bad by the freezing rain this morning (2/25) so we decided to head up to White Lake and see if the steelie action was any better in the afternoon. As soon as we got to the spot, it started to snow so bad with such big flakes that we decided to head back to Muskegon before the roads got too slick and nasty.

We decided to "truck fish" at Hartshorn Marina since it is close by home, and set up our Slammer field-testing spread there. I wanted to see how bad the Slammers would get "slushed up' with a 10" hole and no tending to for hours in high winds and heavy snow. Those big holes sure did what I figured they would and the bare ice we set our Slammers on were eventually huge slush mounds which buried the bases and flags on the Slammers.

We ended up getting another nice eater pike a hair bigger than the one on Saturday and also caught a small perch. The Slammer flags only went to "half-mast" since we intentionally let the snow and slush build up on them, but they released and we landed the fish without a hitch.

What size rod do you want to use, for what kind of fish, and why?? .... Slammer Tip-Ups and the Kits come with instructions on how to adjust them for all different size rods.

Had to get in some panfishing since they were biting near my steelhead spot. The ice is going quick in this area due to the heavy river current and warming temps. I figure I caught over 500 fish in the past few days - mostly bluegill and pumpkinseed (sunfish) along with the occasional perch and rockbass.

I caught quite a few feisty pumpkinseeds like this one.

Not too far of a walk from the parking lot (Wednesday 3/7)

Had them in my "livebag" on Thursday

Friday's Setup

I was joined by a few buddies for Saturday's Panfish Slamfest - Hunter with a nice big (for this lake) bluegill

My pile from today - I was keeping only bluegill and perch

My basic jigging setup - got some neat video but unfortunately don't have a strong enough computer or the know-how to get it online YET!

Crazy Charlie poking around by the open water

My MIRC entry (how big do ya think??)

You've got me "beat" on size - mine was about 4 1/2". Saw something scary yesterday - my buddy caught a red-eye a foot long, kept it over a bluegill (or even a pumpkinseed), and said they were good eating. Big ones come in the summer at my marina. Muskegon Lake M.I.R.C. Invitational !!!

Although I'm probably done goin' out on the ice for the season, I'm not done tip-up fishin'.

If you are the slammer designer, good job,I ordered your kit this year and really enjoy it. So far my slammer is 100% hook-ups on steelhead and trout,no false releases.  They are a fun way to icefish.
