I've caught big pike in deep water during mid season. Late season they will haunt the shallower water. My best have been in 2-3 FOW in the bayous off the river.

I caught mine in May, June, August, September, and October. The biggest through the ice was 36", on a dead smelt. My biggest on open water was just over 52", on a white Shumway Hot head(grub tail), the last week of August. And I always fish for pike in less than 20 feet of water.

Caught my two biggest in very very shallow water. 2-3 FOW with the bait hanging about 8 inches under the ice above the weed line. 18 lbr came in December after 1st ice and 21 lbr came mid January. Both came on two small herring placed on the same hook. Go Figure

I seem to have better luck on the lakes that are Spring fed.
I think it may have something to do with keeping the oxygen level up during the long winter.

We have a small lake that we go to, it is our "action" Lake.

Nothing real big, but it keeps my nephews running for flags.

The best part of the lake, (for pike) is the end where a freshwater spring enters.
We will be standing on 10" of ice, and 40' away there will be open water, from the spring.

I think the same hold true for rivers or small streams dumping into a much larger lake.
If it is in a bay that the pike will use for spawning, so much the better.

18' deep on an inside point, in front of a feeder creek, next to a large flat.
Mid Dec. on a 3" dead Bluegill.

All of my bigger pike come in march, especially late march with safe ice. Most in 3-5' of water around, in, or over shallow weed beds. Most of the big females are looking for the areas to spawn come ice out.

Fishing infront of a feeder stream can also be effective.

I assume we are talking about ice fishing here. General rule of thumb is the later the ice the shallower the fish will be. Doesnt always hold true since you find big pike where they happen to be and pike dont seem to follow any hard, fast rules. Late ice the big females are moving shallow in preperation for the spring spawn. They are looking for abundant winter kill forage to gorge themselves. I generally fish anything from 8' to 25' of water in mid to late february and vary the depth of my bait. In clear water dont be afraid to lift your presentation way off the bottom. A pikes eyes are positioned to see upward much better so try to get the bait up where they can see it. A pike cruising the bottom will swim up as far as it needs to to grab an easy meal.

All my fish over 40 inches have come out of anywhere from 5 to 30 feet of water. All of my real trophy fish have come between 12 pm and last light. My favourite times are from 130 pm to 4 pm and then last light.

These two came from 6 FOW on a dead cisco on a quick strike rig two weeks ago.
I drop the bait about 1 foot below the bottom of the ice.

I know others that will fish as shallow a 1 FOW come late March.
