Ice flies 2 (jigs)
« on: Dec 01, 2017, 09:14 AM »

Welcome back fellow crazies. I've been biting at the bit to hit the hard water but am loving the soft water in the mean time for the fly rod. Began tying some ice flies already though and getting ready for hard water. Hope to see many of you tonight at pto for the ice seminar.
Tight lines

Looks good....is that painted or tied with latex or floss/thread?  Hard to tell with the smaller image.

What is this tungsten scud body you speak of?  Cant say that I have seen those before.  Is it some type of tungsten scud shape on the hook?  If so I need to check those out.  I would imagine with the tungsten bead they would be reasonably heavy, and that would be a good thing.  In the past I have made them with just the bead, but their a bit light to my liking.  Nice work.

The scud is the body part of the jig. It looks like a waxworm sort of.google tungsten scud body and it will pop up.

The scud bodies are with the fly tying stuff. It's a great way to add weight and natural wax worm like shape. They come in various sizes. They were on size 14

here we would call that a bibbit or jig. here a fly is just colored hair tied to a hook.

Ha. Yeah. I hear ya. I fish traditional "flies" too but this is same concept as midges I fly fish with. Fly hook, fly thread, fly scud, and fly fishing uv resin but I get what you are saying . I just hipe they catch fish ;D

Most of these were size 16. I make 18s for droplets and up to 12s

I make Tungsten Ice Flies  and sell then at the Ye'old Tackle box in Northwester, Pinky's Milford,  Online Tackle Warsaw, and Bubbas North of Coumbia city in. on old 30 West.  Been making and fishing them for last 4 yrs deadly on both crappie and gills.  I think they sell them for Around $2.oo each much cheaper then commercial ones.  Just like to see people catch fish. These baits come in many different colors and size 14 to 10 . Let me know if you might like to order some if your not in this area.  Baits are by JR.  Good luck to all and stay safe.

Do you tip them with a mousie or a colored spike or go plain?

Some I tip with spikes like normal jigs. Some I do baitless. The more traditional fly style with dubbing work better baitless.
