Post by: DirtyDan23 on Jan 10, 2019, 11:59 AM
Anyone been out on the bay yet? Been meaning to check it out but haven't gotten around to it yet.

The outer bay had opened back up. I saw quite a bit of blue water out there yesterday. Inner bay is still locked.

Are they driving on Mallets Bay?

Yea, drove out a couple times so far. Last weekend had about 13-15" most places we checked. I believe there will be ice racing this Saturday.

What species do people typically target in Mallets Bay?  I'm heading up that way in a few weeks.  It seems to be one of the deeper bays so I'm curious if it holds different species than the shallower bays further north.

Do you need to be a Vermonter to get a response?  Second post on this board and crickets.

For those who have replied through PM, thank you very much.  I hate to keep PMing the same people so if you have any insight please let me know.  Thanks in advanced.

You waited an hour and 5 minutes. Maybe give it some more time rather than get snippy

Mallets bay is tricky. Its big and you need to move around alot to get the perch.
As far as whats in there, pretty much anything. Pike in the shallows.
Crappie off the weed beds where the large mouths are.
On the outer part of mallets you could catch salmon, trout and maybe walleye.
But perch could be anywhere.
You can get bait at the hardware store, pick up an islander flyer theres a 20% off coupon for there.
Good place.
Goodluck

Thanks for the information.  Much appreciated.  I'll be in South Hero in a couple of weeks.  I typically go after pike when I'm up that way but may change things up.  I may try to venture out to deeper water east of Kibbe point since that is where I'll be staying.  Anyone know if the Tie by Night Fly Shop is open during the winter?  I'd like to check it out while I'm in the area but not sure if it is a seasonal business.

There were probably 30-50 vehicles parked in a line out past Coates Island on Saturday for the ice races. Someone had plowed a wide road all the way out to the parking area.

Anyone been out on the South Hero side of the outer bay, in the area near Robinson Point? Just wondering what we have for ice and if wheelers have been out there.
