Lines per angler...hooks per line?
« on: Feb 08, 2011, 02:01 PM »
Just curious, I couldn't really find anything in the regs.  Obviously 5 lines per angler, but what about hooks.  Two hooks on a line at different depths....permissable?

And correct me if I'm wrong, but if you have kids with you, that's five lines for each of them fishing too right?

from the fishing regs:
Hook: A bent wire device, for the catching of fish, to which
one, two, or three points may be attached to a single shank. Up
to five (5) hooks per line may be used, except where specifically
prohibited. When fishing for salmon or steelhead, the gap
between the point and shank cannot be greater than 5/8 inch. A
single-pointed hook has one shank and one point.

Just got off the phone with the fish guys and they say a treble is considered one hook. I thought about rapalas having 2 or 3 trebles and which would be 6-9 hooks, but this isnt the case

was checked by the fish and game last year asked the same question. was told you can have 5 lines in the water and up to five hooks On each line. didnt ask if treble count at 3 hooks or not would assume they are only one

They are 8 and 10, not old enough for their own license yet, as long as I have mine they are considered licensed at that age I believe, unless I'm wrong.

I believe you are correct.

you are correct, so you can only have 5 lines because you are the only license holder, your kids fall under your possession limit etc. until they are able too be licensed...

duck-slayer you are incorrect
from rules:
Resident children under 14 years of age need not be
accompanied by the holder of a valid fishing license and they
may have their own separate limit.A resident child under 14
may not purchase an annual fishing license and the associated
two-pole permit. Resident children under 14 can purchase a
two-pole permit without a fishing license.

My interpretation is they have their own limit AND can have their own 5 rods

Page 51 of the fishing Regs.

Nonresident children under 14 years of age
must be accompanied by the holder of a valid fishing license
and their fish must be included in the license holder’s limit
in order to fish without a license, or they may purchase a
nonresident license and have their own limit.

Yup, five lines, five hooks, and resident kids can have the same.  A treble hook is a single hook, NOT a single pointed hook.

Kinda' tough to have more than two hooks when icefishing, I think.  From what I have seen on my flasher, pulling fish three feet up to the bait is no problem.  So that would mean to be truely effective with a mulitple hook rig, they would have to be pretty far apart.

Ya I wouldn't go more then two hooks on a line at different depths.  Just thought it might be neat to try out, maybe some different baits even on each one.

I usually run 2 or 3 hooks per line...there is a perfect knot for it...dont know how to describe it, dont know what its called...ill investigate... have never had any issues with the hooks catching the ice...i only have them about a 8 inches apart anyways...

I took the whole family out ice fishing last year (Mom, Dad, 3 boys, and 2 girls).  Fish and game came to check my license and assured me that each one of my youngsters were just fine.  5 rods, individual limits.  I love Idaho.

multiple hooks sound great until you start catching the bottom of the ice with your top hook when the fish is on the bottom hook and doesn't come straight up the hole. or versa visa

I agree.  Sounds great but doesn't work so great.
Keep your gun powder dry and your fishing hooks wet.

I dont know how many times i have caught fish on my second hook, especially with trout. They are so aggressive that if you miss the first bite you get them on your second hook. It is true you usually catch them with your bottom hook, but that second hook comes in handy sometime...

i fished with two hooks per rod most of my life, it's still my go-to setup, the hook almost never catches the edge of the hole, when it does usually it doesn't matter, the fish moving around that close to the hole pulls it off the ice quickly.

also, i talked to my grandpa who worked for the F&G for 30 years and still volunteers for them, and he says that it is 5 lines per angler and up to 5 hooks per line, kids under 14 don't need a license and can have their own 5 lines, and their own limit. which, in Idaho, only really applies to trout and certain lakes. the only stipulation is that the kid has to be able to handle a rod, you can't take a toddler who can barely walk and stick out 5 more lines for him.

So when I was up Sunday I rigged up 5 tip ups with 2 hooks.  Maybe it was just my setup, but seemed like kind of a hassle.  Plus the kids had a hard time dealing with it when they would bring it up, not to mention the tangle.  Will end up going back to just one hook per line, makes it easier for the kiddo's.
