How to Keep Hub From Folding Over in Heavy Winds?
« on: Feb 01, 2017, 03:30 PM »
Ice fishing a lot with my 2 man Eskimo pop-up hub seems to do alright.  I use ice anchors and anchor a main line to hold the shanty in place and then when necessary I anchor the 4 corners of the portable.  In winds at 15 mph or higher it seems to struggle badly.  Sides collapse and pop inwards and it's a constant struggle to keep everything popped out like it should be.  Does anyone have any tips or advice?  Thinking about heading out in the next day or two but forecast calls for 15-16 mph.

Try anchoring a corner into the wind and all four hubs.
It seems to go from zero to hero all some have to do is lie.

I bought extra anchors and use them and ratchet ropes to anchor the hubs. I've been out in 60+mph wind gusts and no problems.

Sounds good.  I'm bringing bungee cords with me so I can anchor the other 3 sides better.  Should be interesting

Anchor the 2 hub centers most likely to see wind. Tie them off with rope or bungee.
It must be something in the water.

Definitely need to anchor all 4 corners and all 4 hubs in the wind.

As the good Mod said, above:  Ratchet ropes or ratchet straps, not overly tight, just snug !

But, it's your privilege to use bungees if you enjoy an in and out effect, sorta like boing-boing-boing.     :roflmao: :roflmao:

Bungees? Kinda like wearing stretch pants to hold in your fat gut. Only time you look good is when you hold your breath.

Should have got a clam. They have straps you run from the center of each pop up to run down to the ice anchors, works great in a 25 mph blow !

I tried that.    Where am I?       Musta passed out?        :nono: :roflmao:

And, a set of 4 ratchet straps can be had at Harbor Freight for a mere pittance.

Like mentioned earlier. Don't put the shanty square into the wind. Rotate it so it has a corner facing into the wind, like a diamond facing north. I've done this with my hub and it works great. I anchor all four corners. Then anchor all four outside walls with rope and anchors. You should use all eight anchors. Four internally and four externally. I only have walls pop in if I don't secure the outside walls. Pull those ropes snug. If you do it right, you won't need ratchet straps

I use ratchet ropes which are faster and easier to use.

And no weird knots to untie when packing up to leave the ice.

For those few folks yet to become familiar with ratchet straps:    Hook both ends, pull most of the slack through the ratchet, give it a couple of flips and it's tight.   To remove, squeeze a single internal lever and pull for slack to release the hooks.     Caveman easy.     :woot: :flex:

Bungee cords are just big rubber-bands. Not really good for an anchor.

I have a Cabelas 360 and the anchor ropes are attached to the hubs no problems in high winds. If it gets really windy there are anchor points on the inside at each corner. It can be a little tricky putting it up in the wind, just make sure it is anchored before you pop the hubs.

i figured out you have to have the hub anchors further away from the hut than you might think in strong winds. the further out they are the more side pull they offer instead of more downward pull.
so try them out about 6 feet away or more. just remember they are there in the dark if you stay that late.

I use cam lock web  straps for the hubs. Even faster than ratchets.

Yes, cam / spring buckle straps https://duckduckgo.com/?q=spring+buckle+straps&ia=products are definitely much simpler and easier to operate than ratchet straps, especially with gloves or mitts on ... been using them for years to keep my Ice Cube hubs pulled out and anchored down. I don't anchor the hub nearest the door (always on the downwind side!) since it puts too much tension on the zipper. Rarely ever had to anchor down the corners.

When i venture from my permi and use my hub style i'm usually on my quad, i park the bike up wind and anchor to it and then the rest to the ice.
hard to blow a 500 lb machine even with a large 4 man pop up acting as a sail !

I like rope ratchets also I hate listening to the noise of flat straps flapping in the wind.

I just run light weight rope from each hub and tie to the anchor, something like para cord works well, it stays tied to the hub so it can't get lost.  I like to tie knots, am pretty quick and know how to make them easily release when I need to break down.  I agree at least 6 feet away from the shack for the more outward then down tension.  I think I am usually 8 to 10 feet out with my anchor.

If you're not into tying knots, check out the Niteize CamJam's.  I don't have any, but they look perfect for this situation.  I may have to get me some.  They would be helpful for packing up the shack at the end of the day too.
