That is so true I’ve been fishing this lake soft and hard water for sometime , knowing your prey sure helps , but eyes on this lake aren’t hard to find getting them to hit might be another story ,
And ice4066 some of us post bad days right along with the good

What lures and colors do all prefer for perch and walleye. Depth and more would help too. Thanks in advance....
Your asking for a whole lot but it always changes. Not to mention the best I can offer is it’s more about presentation then color and other things.
Disclaimer:
I make statements based on my experiences in the location I fished only. Check ice conditions for yourself.

I checked mid north shore again this afternoon. It was 1”-4” of stuff. Not much “good” ice. I got out 100 yards and it went to 1”.

It is deceiving too. Just because it looks the same as what you just walked on it can be totally different.

Not good.
Thanks for another report reeleyz.
I had a "pucker" moment today. I was spudding along on 5" ice with a light snow coating,...then it went to less than 2 " with no visible surface change...

the spud did not go through, but the "sound" of the spud hitting the ice changed and I stopped mid-stride....sure enough thickness went from 5 to one

and a half....and I backed up quick !      I am to old to swim in winter.!      Be careful wherever you are fishing.

My boots on some ice... A line down a hole...Some fish on the screen... And a flag in the air !......Winter is Good !!

I checked the south side, started at 4 and went to less than 2 after a couple hundred yards. It was cracking undermeath me in the last spot l checked.  I predict I'm not going fishing tomorrow.

Thanks for the report Matt.

Ya this side of the Mason Dixon is no better. Kind of surprising, there wasn't a ton of snow on top but apparently enough to really slow the freeze down.

the beach seems to be it saw a few shantys in other spots on east end, on side note it appears that the water is  for sure but still looks lpushing up threw what little ice there is and turning snow to slush wont be good ice but maybe it will add some inches that way and take the insulating snow off. Cant really tell looks like open stretch from about 2mile north west of chapman running towards constantia  north shore

Lakeside outfitters said the ice on Lewis wasn’t quite ready, people being out there has me hopeful that It will be decent by Friday.

So I'm going to Oneida for the first time on the ice ever Friday.
Hoping to park on the north side somewhere, App's or the DEC launch, because I did ok over the summer not far off shore.
Are we thinking it's worth a shot, or should I just head to the beach to be safe?
thanks all,

Randy I agree with Jeff at Lakeside Outfitters ,I'm sure they will be out this weekend but this sun will do some real damage.

thanks all,

I checked a spot not far from Apps yesterday and it is definitely not what I would consider safe. I hear the same thing about the Jewel area. I don't expect a lot to change in the next 2 days. I would not suggest venturing out in that area for your first ice fishing trip here.

Just got back from my first trip to Oneida this winter off the beach.  Headed out early to 20 fow with a few others.  That shelf ice I've been reading about is no joke, easily 3 - 4 ft in layers to get through.  By 8AM  I was in the middle of shantytown so spudded my way out to 21 ft with the same results.  One more move an hour later out to 23 ft and I was down to 6" of ice but no shelf ice.  Spoke with one guy who ventured out to 25 ft but only on 3" ice.  Didn't mark many today but enough perch for a meal.  Counted 90 tents at 10AM.  Bring your spud especially if you're off the beaten path.

Trapping may be the way to go with this forecast.  This could be the latest season in my life to get started.  We could be looking at February or we're all going to cut up the beach!

Could be worse, you could be waiting for Lake Erie to freeze every year.
