'Gills and Largies Galore
« on: Dec 22, 2007, 03:39 PM »
Ok, maybe not galore.  But we found a few today.

Got out onto the Ottawa with Richard and Ransome this morning to hit up the 'eyes.  Nada.

Found a little spot with some pannies on it so we hit 'em hard with honey worm tipped Genz Bugs.  Between the 3 of us, we had over 80 gills, 9 largies and a slew of perch.  Not a single crappie on the day which kinda sucked as both Ransome and I were hungry  :roflmao: :roflmao:

There had to have been 5" of slush and water on the surface and even if you found a nice "dry" spot as soon as you popped your holes you'd be flooded with 2" of the drink.

Went home with 2 mean soakers but managed to get a few shots today...

Rich with a fat largie

He found some jumbos as well

Random 'gill shot

Little largie for me

Good fishin'

Noticed you guy's out there today. We were in the middle of all the bucket boys. :D

We ended up with about 100 Gills and Crappie. Lost 1 pike on the tip up,  must of been good, I was using a quick strike rig with an 8" sucker (thanks Bowzog) and a 12" leader and he cut me off just above it.  He ended up taking about 25' of line before I could get to it.

We also had 2 wet feet.  But overall not a bad day.

As always, it was lots of fun out there. I had one cigar sized sauger before giving up on the eyes. The panies were a lot of fun with some bonus largies mixed in. If it wasn't so friggin wet out there I would have moved around a bit for the crappies.

Yes I was able to get him out. ;) First time out for him this year.  Like Rich said, I would have also moved around if it wasn't so wet.

It was a  good day with the floor in the 5600.

Nice shots... I'm grounded with company for the holidays.

Off next week though... so here's hoping I can get out somewhere.  I have to run to Belleville but I don' think the bay will be up to par after this rain.  Will check it out though.

Nuke is correct DJ, and HT Enterprises sells 'em here in North America so they're readily available at most any good bait and tackle.  They fish heavy for a tiny jig and are easy to mark on a flasher.

DJ, it's half a Berkeley Powerbait Honey Worm in red colour.  They work quite well up here for pannies.

Andrew, I took delivery of a CJ&S gift pack from a prostaffer bud of mine... I like those Diamond jigs tipped with Lindy Nail Tails... I don't really like the CJ&S plastics

Never tried the Little Atoms though...  ::)

BM, Do you use a live bait below the piece of Berkly power bait?  Spike, Mousie or waxworm when your looking for Gill's??????  DEERJOHN

I use a honey worm in lieu of a live bait.  The hook on these Marmooska's is so small that I just thread on half a honey worm and I doubt there'd be room to put anything else, lol.  In fact, I don't know many people in my area that use any live bait for pannies, mostly just small jigs and plastics with the occasional wax worm or dew worm dunker thrown in the mix...
