Wow $5/doz!  Yikes!  South of the border in my neck of the woods we're <$2/doz.  I prefer the yard worms but I like to grab 'em at night and sometimes sleep wins out.

No bucket in the basement, but a bait fridge with a Frabill Habitat II in the garage.

Please pardon me butting in from across your southern border.

Catch a bunch of night crawlers, and put in ice cream pale in cool dark place full of dirt- and they will last months..

Never tried but now I will. I don’t really like having to pay for things that are free. Reminds me of the time when I was buying rocks for my aquarium and then it hit me that I can just find them literally anywhere.

I have a meal worm farm going.  Which reminds me it is time to change the bedding.  All you add to it is potatoes and bran.  100's of worms.  I feed the dead beetles to the fish, not on a hook though.

Mill worms are very easy to raise. Any large plastic tub with a lid,old aquarium, metal can 5 gallon size. I raised mine in a 55 gallon aquarium that leaked. Dump a 10 lb bag of wheat bran, lay a few layers of newspapers over the top,add a few mill worms and give them a piece of potatoes or carrot once in a why. They go through a cycle worms, pupa, and then a beetle. They multiple quickly, use can pick the size you want from tiny one to full size. The soft pupa make good Panfish bait the full size ones trout love. I don't really use mill worms anymore,I mostly fish plastic, and if I buy bait is 500 waxies for the year.

Yep i have been picking my own night crawlers for over 25 years now. Spring and fall. When storing them, give them some used coffee grounds.
Just add water.

I bought 100 meal worms from a pet store and some bran from bulk foods.  Then once a week I add a sliced potato.  They live in a small clear tote.  They don't fly or crawl out of the plastic tote.

I use to raise meal worms for my pets, but fornicenfishingni rarely ever use them, just wax worms for jigs and lures, and night crawlers for set lines for trout.
