I haven't been out to any of the main lakes, but smaller ponds like strawberry have been freezing up as long as it stays cold during the day. I normally don't start icefishing until middle of Jan. because my dad is afraid of going on anything less than 12". They should start freezing up soon though.

I can't imagine much ice anywhere yet. This week will start the process I hope! A couple of weeks in the 20s and low 30s all day and night would make it happen.

12"? To drive or walk on it?

Walking. He won't believe me when I say technically if its new ice that you can walk out on 2-3".I won't go on anything less than 7" because I would rather be safe than sorry. He would rather have the ice 18" or more.

I'm gonna try stockade by Custer this weekend. This is usually my first week on the ice. I'm expecting it to be do-able. I don't think I could wait for 12". Jeez!

I brought home 11 nice crappies and 6 perch before it started snowing so hard that I thought I'd better start home. 6" at Stockade. My buddy caught 1 2lb pike, tip-ups were slow. Great 1st day out and I'll get to eat some long awaited ice fish tomorrow!

Out deer hunting this morning I was checking the lakes on the way and they were iced over around Aberdeen. Not sure on the thickness, but I was walking on anywhere from 3-4 inches on stock dams, should be about ready.

I drove out to Richmond by Aberdeen today and no one was on the ice, but I could see where someone had dragged a portable out and fished for a while. I think I'll wait till next weekend though.

fished mud lake s. of Redfield. Plenty of ice, but only a few bites, but I'm new to the area, and was first to fish, so had to guess where they might be!

Hey South Dakota-----
With these temps we all should be smiling....
Looks good for the ice build, it should be ready on all the small dams here,
I plan to check some of the bays along Lake Sharpe this week, I'll post a report then.

Keep us updated on the NE lakes, thanks

You know it! I like what I'm hearing. I guess it's safe to say I can get out in Custer and get the transponder, lines and hands wet?

Went out to Newell Lake Sunday fishing and there was 4-6". Went to Wall lake yesterday and there was just enough to fish on (2 1/2 inches). Went to Keyhole today in wyoming and there was a good 5-6 inches so everywhere should be thick enough. The only place that may not be is Orman Dam (Belle Fourche Resivour) because it has some weird currents.  So far the fishing has been horrible. Only caught a couple pike so far, so its not like usual.

I have been wanting to get out, but mama had some surgery Thursday and isn't feeling very frisky yet. I was talking to paddlefish yesterday and he said you guys may have some nice slabs in your part of the country waiting to be caught.  ;)
