Utah > Ice Fishing Utah

Rockport March 14, 2021

(1/1)

Tanglemeister:
Headed up to Rockport this morning in hopes of fishing the hardwater.  Found lots of open water at the South end and a foot or two open at the edges, all the way around the reservoir.  Nobody out on the ice anywhere.  Hmmm.

Brought along the planks expecting to need them.  Was hoping to get on solid ice near the boat ramp.  Walked the planks out about 20 feet and drilled.  2.5" to 3".  No go.  We might have been able to get on, but getting off with temps in the upper 40s later in the day seemed like trouble waiting to happen.

Drove to several other spots on the East shore within the park to see if it looked better towards the dam.  Nope.  Grey (waterlogged) snow for 30 to 50 feet from the edges.

We thought about East Canyon and Echo and checked the forecast -- identical temps predicted.  Decided not to waste the gas and headed home.   :(

With night time lows at these reservoirs only in the high 20s, and day time highs pushing 50, we may be done for the year.   :'(

Unless we see a string of single digit lows again?   ::)

Sigh.

Sorry to hear about the no go on the hard deck. Those afternoon/evening high temp just don't help out at all for sure. Looks like some plans might have to change this week for getting on some safe ice. Thanks for the update tanglemeister.

Damnit - I hate it when that happens.

PACKFAN-UT:
Guess my thoughts will have to drift toward soft water, this time of year use to be dynamite for walleye fishing from float tubes  at night on Willard, too many health issues now to do that anymore. Sure miss those days.
