LAKE SKEGEMOG 2021
« on: Dec 20, 2020, 12:36 PM »
Stopped by Skegemog today. Sunday 12-20-20

Not even close  :(
We need it to cool off, 39 degrees doesn't cut it.

About a half-inch of drift ice by the boat launch, not sure what was out further but it looked like slush and open water

I checked Skegemog tonight after work  Wednesday 12-30-20  :(

I was only able to walk out about 10 feet, about an inch and a half of ice.

The warm weather and heavy wet snow are not helping.

The long-range forecast doesn't look good for the next couple of weeks.
With any luck, it will at least get cold at night.

Good Luck All

Fished Skegemog this morning Saturday 01-09-21

4" to 6" of ice in the areas I checked, other thicknesses available  :P

Very busy, lots of people, they were even parking on the road.

Smooth bare ice so cleats are a must. You know it's slick when the ice boats are out.

As always on Skegemog lots of little perch! They are biting on everything including a bare hook.

You can sort out some keepers though, I kept 15 between 8" and 13"

Good Luck All

Later that night

Just seen live video. They said one inch slush but it looked like it just snowed this morning there. Snow on people’s tubs.

Does anyone have some pointers for a first timer to Skegemog?  A previous planned trip to Little Bay De Noc fell through so I am trying to scramble and find a new spot. Its not everyday the wife gives me the opportunity to take a fishing getaway.  Thanks in advance fellas

Are you renting a place on that body of ice?  Personally I would not go out of my way to Skegmog as a destination (I have a place near there and still don't fish it much).  I have not heard many reports this season that the bite is to die for.  I would suggest Burt or Mullet for a destination trip.  The fishing has been good and the variety of species would be similar to Little Bay de Noc. Ditto. But on the upside, its a great lake for crowds and dink perch.

The Bite is always good on Skegemog, as many perch as you want to catch!
IF you will catch any over 6" is the big question  ;)

There are some nice fish in there and I have caught enough for a nice meal a few times so far this year.
Some of my largest Perch have come out of Skegemog (almost always at last ice)

A lot, and I do mean a lot of sorting, and some luck is required to make a meal out of your trip.

look for the crowds off the boat ramp.
One group is out about a 1/4 mile slightly to the left fishing the 14' drop off to the basin
Another group is straight out about a 1/4 mile fishing 10-12'
The third group is straight out about a 1/2 mile fishing 12-14'
The last group is out about 3/4 of a mile just in front of the pike spearing shacks.
And of course, there are people spread out away from the groups.

I usually set up a tip-up with a golden (there are some nice fat pike in there)
Inside the shack, I jig in one hole and deadstick the other with a minnow and slip bobber.
Top baits are minnows, wigglers, spikes, mousies, butters, and waxies.
Any jig will work but I like the vertical jigs or an old school jig-a-whopper rocket minnow style jigs.

The color I use will vary from day to day and hour to hour,  but any jig color with 3 spikes or a minnow is a good place to start.

All that being said I would fish Mullet and Black any day over Skegomog if it was a closer drive. :)

Thanks everyone for the input. I guess I will definitely have to research those two lakes. Any pointers on the two listed? Thanks again. I’ll post pics if I get into some fish to let you gents know. Once again thank you
