Plastic welding to repair your ice sleds.
« on: Dec 18, 2020, 12:59 AM »
Just a heads up to those who haven't heard/seen/know of plastic welding  to repair your ice sled. Harbor freight sells the kit for $18. Easy to do.

What did you use to melt the plastic weld material? The iron that comes with the kit doesn't seem to get hot enough to get it to flow right to fix the cracks in my sled.

I have been using my plastic welder for my plastic boats as well. You can do Kayaks and any plastic boat out there. I plugged screw holes from old rod holders and some cracks as well. It is easy to use.

you can just use a soldering iron and zip ties too!  we used to do it on dirt bike fenders n stuff.

Used one on my sled a couple weeks ago and it worked great. Word of warning: it smells. Garage smelled like burnt plastic for 2 days. If I did it in the basement like originally planned the wife would've killed me.

The harbor freight tool lasted just long enough to get my sled fixed up then fell apart. Returned it for a refund but it did the job it needed to do.

A $1 stick of P-tex....what you repair ski bottoms with. Comes in black. Light on fire and let drip/run where crack is. I used it for years....and on my sled. Works great.

I use the lid from a 5 gallon bucket as my material to melt. I can weld the crack of dawn with that plastic welder.

I have used a heat gun to weld motorcycle fenders, and got plastic cross stitch mat from Walmart to use as plastic filler. It does take some practice to get the feel for melting it enough to bond, but not enough to completely melt the base material, but it can be done. I have also repaired base gouges in skis using a ptex candle (basically a stick of plastic you light and drip on the ski). I thought about using that to cover the countersunk holes in the bases of my Smitty sled where I screwed them to the uprights. Has anyone ever cared enough to try that?

Yes, like I said in my post....I used it to repair my sled. The P-tex works great. Make sure item to be repaired is at room temp or warmer. Put a backer behind hole, fill, cool, remove backer, sand if necessary. It's a $1 ten minute fix.

There is a product by Easy ABS Repair. I found on line ,so i called the PH # 18666577988 . It was Saturday afternoon the man who answered the call was the founder/ President /Owner of the company. He chatted with me for a bit and redirected to the web site. Ordered the kit with a couple of extra sheets of abs patch.  Around $50 CND. Showed up in good time considering the covid enviroment within the week. A bottle of slurry / glue and patches cleaned up the repair area with steel wire wheel on drill, cut and molded abs patch with heat gun (hair blower would had worked) Applied slurry on both patch and sled clamped on for 24/48hrs and walla peant butter sandwiches patch and re enforced the corner of my Frabill Tracker also did the other front corner at the same time. Very easy to use with no open flame. Have pictures to post but apparently easy to used ABS repair Kit for me that posting photos.

I repaired mine was well. The weld held strong all last winter, and throughout this fall hauling firewood.

Heres a video of my repair if anyone wants to check it out

The plastic weld held up great. Have done a few other things. I'm really impressed with just how well it holds up and filling in old holes that a guy drilled. Makes a guys flipover ice shack sleds last a number of years longer which is nice.
