A local man, lost the other day. I can't say it enough on here, GET A CO DETECTOR!!! Do NOT rely on a low-oxygen sensor that is on some of the heaters, NOT enough!!!! What's your life worth?

Officials identify Austin man found dead in fish house

Posted: Friday, January 23, 2015 7:40 pm

WASECA — Authorities have identified the Austin man who died Thursday in a Waseca fish house as 41-year-old William Blom, Waseca County Sheriff Brad Milbrath announced Friday.

An autopsy performed Thursday by the Ramsey County Medical Examiner's Office determined that Blom's death was caused by carbon monoxide poisoning. He had been ice fishing on Clear Lake with his father, who first alerted authorities to the situation at about noon.

"Our deepest sympathy goes out to the Blom family," Sheriff Milbrath wrote on the department's Facebook page.

The Waseca Fire Department and North Ambulance assisted at the scene.

Very sad! A good reminder to make sure to keep fresh air coming in when using heaters. Even charcoal throws a lot of carbon monoxide.

The front door on my huts stays open the whole time.
Had an instance a few years ago with my popup when the door was closed even though the vents were open.
Started to get the CO headache, ended up opening the door after that.

That's too bad. It's both tragic and totally avoidable....

Just last night I had a friend telling me that he and his wife always get headaches when they run their heater. I told him to make sure to allow for some fresh air flow!! If my heater or lantern is on, I always have my side vents open and I unzip the front and back doors a good 8" or so to allow fresh air to pass through.

Very sad to see this.  My next big purchase is an ice shanty and heater, so it's good reminder to vent out the CO.

Sad to hear a life was lost that could have been prevented. C/O detectors are very important. No matter what your C/O detector costs, if it sends an alarm it is telling you something. Pay attention ! Wannaketchum and Drifter you are spot on with cross flow ventilation. The vents in my new hut are both high on the walls. So there is a need for air to enter lower near the bottom to provide a draft.
Oops! is too late.
