I finally built one this year.  What a difference!!  Now, if I could ever figure out how to post pics on this darn thing, I would show it off!!

I have made two different styles of retractable skis. The problem is ice builds up in the joints and freezes tight. this happens on both the conduit and downhill skis. nothing worse than having to drag a broke down shanty which is loaded off the ice.

Thanks, I will keep that in mind

Just watch for a pair to show up in the trash or flea market. I left my long on the backside . This works like a dog mushers sled. It lets you or a partner have a place to rest while the other pulls. Your S.O.L if your by yourself. :roflmao:

This my version before finishing it off. No fasteners in the cross rails, just notched, similar to your idea of a dove tail. People said it wouldn't be strong enough, but it is. Easy to take apart and transport.
This may have been what sparked my idea, which is a clever variation. Apparently no consensus (so far) on my other questions.

I just got off the phone with a local ski shop, And told me come in, got something in the basement you can have for free.  Wow!  I guess I just got another project.  Nice guy.  I also ordered a cover the other day for it.  New old sled. LOL

Sweet set-up ljc2tall!!!  I'm curious to see if the skis will stay put while towing like we talked about, or of you'll have to pin them up.  Either way, looks awesome!!

I am going to put some covers(keepers) over the stops that will guide the legs in place and hold them there.

I got 2 pair from a local ski resort for $10 a pair.  Plus, Bart was gracious enough to give me another set!

The storage system was fun to build too. I just back the Little Red Truck in the garage, hook it up and winch it up into the rafters. In the summer it's my "Toon" hanging in wait.  ;D

Almost bought one at Harbor freight but it was 12v and I would have had to rig up a battery etc.  :-\

Harbor Freight has one for $10 less. The one review was not favorable. But they do offer a 25% off coupon all the time.

Rg, do you have and issue with the Skis pivoting on the conduit?
Are you using regular conduit couplers to join it all together?

ljc, thats an awesome setup!

Looks good. Don't know how the EMT is going to hold up. Maybe rigid would be better. Virtually indestructible. Good luck with it!
