I've seen them up to around 10". But a decent size for public waters is about 8.5". If you can get a 9+ thats IMO one to go back. The 8-9 are very very good eating.

You are exactly right, they are about half way between a rockbass and a bluegill. I'm not a real fan of eating rockbass, but these are a little more mild and more bluegilly if that make sense. Like I said, they taste like a crappie. Not quite as "fishy" as a bass or rockbass, but not as mild as a bluegill.

If you get one in the spring, during the spawn, the males are IMO one of the most beautiful fish in the water.

The red fins are awsome.

Yeah definitely a green sunfish.

What's with the open water in the background?
I live in the midwest now but have fond memories of fishing in New England as a kid.

Bikini polar bear club came by and I just couldn't tell them no.

My wife was freeking when she seen this pic too, still lmao.

We have them in Michigan, but they get up to 15 lbs!  War Mouth we call em.  Highly poisonous, and Chuck Norris fast!  Easiest way to catch them is to stick yer head down the hole and call, here fishy fishy!  Make sure you get your head back out quick!!  You've got just a wee one there probably just from the womb, as they give live birth.  So next time on the pond you can call them or you can set a tip up and bait it with an albino grizzly bear cub dusted with fruity pebbles, everyone knows they love fruity pebbles!  Sit back and wait for yer flag to fly!!!  Good luck.

I know you are joking, but don't confuse the green sunfish with a warmouth, they are two different fish. People do it a lot around here. Warmouth are brown.

as bbk said, they are all over the place here and occasionally you will find one in the 8-10" range.  some ponds also have hybrid gills that i think are bred with greenies. they look just like gills except their mouths are big like the greenie.

having alot of backwater areas, these things do real well in shallow water and can survive the cold winters.   many of our backwaters are full of green sunfish, bowfin, and carp.

definitely a green sunfish, if you had caught him in Idaho you'd have the new state record. i have a couple smaller ones in the aquarium in my room.

Great pics of the kiddos, some of the best of the season on the shanty IMO.

Take it you guys dont have many greenies in your area? We call em flathead bait here  ;D

nope.  most people only know bluegills and pumpkinseeds around here, but we actually have 5 catchable species of bluegills in this state.

To fillet, or not to fillet....that is the question  :-\
