Title: Losing my jig in last few feet before bottom??
Post by: Ksword on Jan 29, 2021, 07:18 AM
My flasher seems to be working fine, but the flasher appears to be showing the bottom roughly 2-3 feet above where it actually is..   My jig continues to drop after it ‘disappears into the bottom’ for a few feet.

Any ideas??

Hummingbird Ice 35, roughly 45 ft of water...

Thanks in advance for any comments.

It could be a few things.  Bouncing off a nearby rock, could be on a drop off, or you could be above a really steep angle which would read only the shallower part of the angle.

VT - thanks for the reply.  Good thoughts. I will try moving the hut over a few feet to see it it improves.  I am located on rocky and steep drop off.

Thanks,

K

Not sure if the Hummingbird has a "Gain" feature, but that could also be an issue.

If you can narrow your beam yo may pick up your jig ..narrow beam and deep water go hand and hand .

Thanks to all for your suggestions.  Much appreciated.

Will check to make sure transducer is hanging level etc.

Sounds like my lure is in the dead zone ( great article - thx).  Right now hut is situated on a drop off.  Will be moving it tomorrow - so will see if this helps.  Might need to see if there is a narrow beam transducer available for this model.

Thanks again for the comments.

Yes, you should be able to switch the transducer from wide angle to narrow, changing the cone size, using the "beam" button.

Where does the Icon show up ..hard to tell on the video ..is it a number and/or cone picture ?

It is a false bottom. It is some form of structure that is higher in the column. Usually a boulder or a ledge. Sometimes a narrow cone will help, and sometimes a small move is in order.

I can read through a dead zone with my marcum lx7 ,and my helix 5 takes a little getting use to and that’s on graph mode , I could never read through it with my vex nor my older lowrance

I tried changing the beam setting and it didn’t help.

Moved the hut and the issue is gone.  Must have been a rock or something at the old location.

Thanks for all the advice!!

A tiny bit of current can swing your jig out of the cone.

Ive noticed a deadzone on my helix 5 the last two times Ive been out. I doubt it was a large rockpile or something both times. Ive been i pretty flot areas. Fishing 15-18 FOW, my jig shows on bottom on the screen and then i feel bottom at least a foot or two lower. I tried changing the cone angle, but it only has 2 options and neither helped.

For anyone else with this problem, its definitely a ledge or rock or something. My humminbird in narrow 9deg beam showed bottom at 30' yesterday. I dropped my spoon down and decided to bounce bottom, it kept going.. and going... and going. and going. We grabbed the camera and dropped it down, we were on the edge of an old bridge.. Camera never did reach bottom, so it was more than 50 foot down off the edge and my screen said 30.
