Most excellent Kyle.....The grizzly tracks are amazing.....Thanks for contributing the pics !!

By the way.....the wife & I are hopefully gonna make it down your way towards the end of summer. If we do it will more than likely be a week or two before Labor Day . We haven't been down that way in a few years which is so unlike us because for years we always made it down there at least once a year. Maybe we can hook up & have a beverage or two if we make it down @). Take care !!

Thanks, I'll post more as we go along. He's a great pup... a work in progress of course, but a real sweet dog. First Doberman we've had, last 3 have been boxers. Can't wait to make some memories and share some adventures with him.

I think it's important for kids to have pets, especially puppies and dogs in general. It teaches them a lot about life. From raising and training to love and loss... good and bad, better or worse! It's all a part of it, I have good memories of all the dogs that I've shared life with and I want that for all my boys as well.

Since the weather has been cooperative the past couple days, I've been fairly busy.....busy exploring on the ATV that is. Fleecer Mountain area yesterday & the Homestake/Pipestone area today. Ended up at 60 miles for the two days.

The Fleecer area has a ton of snow remaining. I was riding on 1 - 2 feet of hard snowmobile packed snow for several miles. The higher in elevation I got the more snow I encountered. Didn't feel like getting stuck, so ended up turning around when I started breaking through on about 4 feet of snow. Came across a fresh set of bear tracks in the snow that crossed the road & were heading to lower elevation. I was lucky enough to see him on my way back to the truck. I was cruising about 35 mph on the main road, came around a corner & there he was just ambling down the road. Saw him for maybe 5 seconds. He was small, just a youngster. His front half was really dark brown (almost black) & his back half was rust colored. Always nice seeing some wildlife !!

The Homestake/Pipestone area today was the complete opposite of yesterday. No snow, just dusty roads & trails. It was a frickn' circus up there. Campers all over the place, UTV's, ATV's & MX bikes cruising everywhere. I went by Delmoe Lake & it is completely ice free.....open water. I glassed down there to see 2 boats & a pontoon on the water. Who would have thought?!?!

BackCountry Kyle the Hydro dip process gives the skull a different look when finished. The shot of Sheamus next to the skull and your truck shows how much growing he has left to do until he reaches adult size.
SpitzoMT another series of great photos beautiful scenery you have out there in Montana.

Strippinthedream thank you for the information on your dog. I'm not familiar with the Catahula bred will have to do some research. Nice photo of your son with the pheasants is he allowed to hunt in your state with an accompanying adult licensed hunter?
G fish great photos what bred of turkey do you hunt for in Idaho. I'm located in south eastern New York we have the eastern turkey here I believe there are four different breeds of turkey spread across the continental United States.

Strippnthedream I did a search on the American Kennel Club's web site and found some info. on the Catahoula Leopard dog . The breed originated in North Central Lousiana around Catahoula Lake. (Catahoula is from Chocktow Indian origin and means sacred lake) because of the spots on dogs coats it is called leopard. This breed is listed and shown among the Herding dog group. Your dog being a mixed breed with Lab retriever as you have stated should make a good bird hunting dog with proper training. You and the family enjoy your pets.
You have to love Ice Shanty never know what a members post will lead you to discover.

Good looking kids, dogs, and birds!

Awesome shots G-fish, so cool to spend some spring mornings in the blind. That's quality time right there...

Dana- I love her face! she's a pretty girl. We'll have to get those two together sometime, maybe she can teach Sheamus a thing or two(or 3). We've been working on all his obedience but he seems to be a fairly natural retriever, which surprises me. My ma has been visiting and she calls him a Doberman Retriever! Not sure how he'll ever do in the field but its what my family is in to so he'll figure it out...

Steve- I thought Sheamus looked like a hound when we first got him cuz his ears and paws were so big and he has so much skin to grow into... The majority of Dobies have cropped ears and our breeder even tried to steer us that way. We voted on it as a family and it was 3-2 against... It has to be done before 12 weeks to form properly, but its only cosmetic. There is no real benefit or ill effects either way. You will start to see more and more floppy-eared, long-tailed Dobermans and boxers because a lot of European countries are outlawing the practice of docking and cropping and it's gaining popularity in the states. All our boxers were floppy eared and I think it makes them look less intimidating which is fine by me. I am a fan of the tail docking however, those things can knock a kid out cold! :o Plus they do that shortly after birth so you don't get a choice.

Thanks again for posting fellas, always nice to visit on The Shanty...
Keep the good times rolling!

G fish thank you for the reply I believe there are four major breeds of turkeys in the continental U.S. Eastern, Merriam,Rio and Osceola . If a turkey hunter gets one bird from each breed  they call it a grand slam .
BackCountry Kyle I forgot about the tail docking I'm always cautious around Dobermans since many people have them trained to be watch/guard dogs. I have met a few Dobermans that were some of the friendliest and most playful dogs. I understand your feeling on the tail docking when larger breed dogs get excited and their tails start moving they can give you a good beating on the legs so can see a small child getting injured by an excited dogs tail.

Morning everyone !! As of 5am this morning I got my four night shifts out of the way. Three days off now & it looks like the weather is going to be nice. The county is cleaning my streets today, so I have to get a car & my snowmobile trailer moved by 7am. Getting some new sidewalk done here at the house. The guys got the old tore out yesterday, will be here today putting in the forms & cement will be poured Wednesday. Considered getting the 5th-wheel out of storage & doing some camping for a couple days, but I bagged that idea & I'm just going to spend my days off doing some more exploring on the ATV. Have a great day !! - Wayne

Title: Re: >> Off - Season Thread <<
Post by: BackCountry Kyle on May 15, 2017, 10:15 AM
Could be... but Bear are a mainly scavengers and will prey more on elk calves than an adult. A big lion could take a bull elk down... better chance in later winter with more fatigued animals, they go after deer more than elk really. Wolves would more likely be the predator I could imagine killing this elk,... they are built specifically for it, do it more often, and are good at it! Where I found that guy was really thick with dead fall, could've been a tree! But ultimately it was more likely just a winter kill,... Winters can be brutal here. And these bull elk have a tough time of it, many of them remain in the high(er) country all year. Stick to some of the heavier timbered areas for cover and that snow will wear any beast down... Half of the fun of exploring the mountains and finding these things for me is trying to play detective afterward... This time I was about 3 years too late to have any solid evidence of how this 6x6 met his end.

Mfish- We all know you have some fish pics to share... Any shrooms yet?... Are you posting them all on MFF?

also, always the possibility that someone lost that bull. It sucks, but it happens. hopefully he just dies after a happy life of making lots of little elk loL!!!
Oh man, the mushrooms are rocking. There hasn't been a spring like this for 15 years-ish. Hopping to get out tomorrow and poke around, been too busy. I see a bit of warm weather coming that should make them jump out of the ground again:0) This is one of those years everyone is a mushroom picker, because the conditions are soo good!!

Exactly, a real good possibility actually... I like the optimism tho!

Nice shots, hope to get some nice weather here too and go on the shroom hunt... Spring doesn't get sprung around here until everyone else is halfway through it seems, but when it hits the shrooms grow quick! Its a great family activity. I let the 4yr old carry a toy gun while we are out... it keeps him interested. I teach small bits of gun safety, it helps make some noise to let those bears know we're coming, and he gets to set his sites on some squirrels, grouse, and the occasional curious deer! One of his life goals is to "boom" a deer with his dad... it's one of mine too! ;D

Good luck out there!

Excellent, excellent photos everyone.....Thanks a bunch for sharing & contributing to the thread !!

@ Kyle - Amazing pics sir.....Shed hunting has treated you well this year.....Nice work !!

@ mfish - Amazing pics to you as well sir.....I see you never stop catching fish lol.....Job well done !!

Unfortunately, I have no pics to share. I ended up with a 48 hour stomach bug last week on my days off, so the only thing I got a view of was that piece of porcelain in the bathroom - LOL. Just received a Winter Storm Watch alert on my phone for tonight thru Thursday morning. Looking like up to 5" of snow here, 6" - 12" for G'Town Lake/area passes & up to 2 feet for higher elevations. I do hope that when it finally starts warming up that it does so gradually. If not, western Montana will be in for some severe flooding from this years snowpack. Made my last post knee surgery visit to the doctor this morning. Meniscus has healed up well, so now I'm just dealing with the pain of a little arthritis & complete lack of cartilage on the inner leg side of the knee. Definitely doing better tho & getting around pretty darn good. Doctor says, "Just remember.....You're turning 50 this year, not 25 !!" Like I need to be reminded, I'm feeling it everyday - LOL.

Keep the posts/pics coming & take care everyone !!

Kyle do you use warm or cold water
Title: Re: >> Off - Season Thread <<
Post by: BackCountry Kyle on May 18, 2017, 10:31 AM
Cold- I fill a Rubbermaid tote with cold water and that seems to work pretty good. The tote will forever have paint around the water level and some sinks after you brush the excess away, so don't use one that the Mrs. stores nice things in! Guess you could clean it off it you cared to. Other than that its pretty mess free. I hang mine after to help the water drain and give it a good shake every so often for the same reason. Don't freak out if it doesn't work the way you hoped either, you can always repaint and redip...

The daughter & I got out today for some fishing (had 1 bite is all), a little hike & generally just did a bit of exploring. What a beautiful day !! On the way home we spotted a black bear sow with two itty bitty cubs. They were about a 1/4 mile away in a ravine. Mom was feasting on grass & the little ones were just playing around. What a hoot.....very cool to see !! We watched them for roughly 40 minutes. We both tried taking some pics, but the smartphones just wouldn't pick them up that far away. Oh well, great day spent in the outdoors !!

@ G fish - Great pics.....The Flathead sunrise is just beautiful.....Those pools would have cooled ya down for sure.....Daughter waded out in that lake past her waist & she was absolutely freezing after she got out.....She had to go warm up in the truck.

@ Kyle - Looks like the outdoors is treating you well.....Sheds & shrooms.....Can't beat that.....It sure is nice to just get out after the long winter.....Shake the cabin fever off & enjoy some nicer weather.....Bring on summer !!

I got off work & loaded up the 5th-wheel for the first camping trip of the year. Headed out bright n' early in the morning & plan on staying out for 6 nights. Looks like the weather is actually going to be favorable too. I'm feeling the need for speed & I'm so looking forward to racking up some miles in the Maverick as I haven't driven it in almost 8 months. I should have quite a few pics to share come next Thursday. Until then, everyone stay safe & enjoy the holiday weekend !!

G fish nice photos I especially like the one with clouds refelecting off of lake.
BackCountry Kyle since I'm not a hunter curious why your state and a few others have a spring bear hunting season does it not cause a few cubs to be orphaned when their mothers get killed. Also what do you do with all the shed antlers ? To you and all the other mushroom gatherers be careful as I'm sure you know some varieties are highly poisonous and look similar to nonpoisonous types.

Thank you for taking the time to post your photos gentlemen.  SpitzoMT have a good trip.

Post by: BackCountry Kyle on May 26, 2017, 11:56 AM
Steve- Thanks for your questions and comments! It is illegal to harvest a female with cubs,... I'm sure it happens but it is something that is hammered into bear hunters to take extra caution to avoid. My brother harvested a "dry sow" for instance last year. Meaning a sow without cubs. Another thing is all bears are subject to a game warden inspection as well as a kill site inspection. These help keep folks honest. My son and I have seen two sows with cubs this year and a few grizzlies. I have eaten tag soup many years and our spring season ends soon so that may be the case again, which is fine and my son also knows that. I look at bear hunts as almost a once in a lifetime thing, right now we are just working at finding the boy a real nice bear. I'm not even carrying a tag, one bear is enough... Spring bear hunts allow hunters to harvest a bear with a fuller coat, guard hairs they have help the coat look amazing... by the time fall arrives those guard hairs have laid down and many bears (boars especially) have rubbed a lot leaving their coats not nearly as beautiful or bare in some spots.

As for the sheds,... well I like to collect them mainly  :) My wife thinks its silly that I like them so much,... so I've sold a number of real nice sets in the past to show her there is some reward in it (wish I had them back!). Its a type of hoarding... I think without that shed I'll lose them memory of that trip/hike, not the case... she's right I have a problem  ;) I'll end up selling them off soon as I'd like to purchase a new rifle. I've also done some projects with them,... I'll take some pictures of those, pretty cool too I must say. You'll see!

Weekend is getting close, enjoy and be safe!

Kyle thank you for the reply. We only have black bears here in New York I believe the hunting season is in the fall same time you can hunt for white tail deer. I thought maybe your overall bear population was high enough that state wildlife officials feel the population could be smaller to avoid more bear /human conflicts. I know people use the shed antlers for making knife handles or a couple sets to make a hanging lamp.
Have a good Memorial Day weekend.

Tinker- I don't even log into fish finder anymore. Never really has been much there for me. Ice shanty could work for all seasons really. Don't see why not...

Hope everyone had a great holiday weekend.....A bunch of great stuff added while I was on a short hiatus !!

@ Stripp - Very nice fish sir !! I think the lakers would have had my attention as well.

@ G fish - Once again, amazing photos.....Love the hummingbird shot !!

@ Kyle - I see you're not only good at finding the sheds, but putting them to use too.....Excellent work sir !!

@ Tinker - MyFishFinder is just weak as far as forums go.....I have yet to find any use for that site.

Well, as you can all tell, I made it back to the world of cell service & internet today. The first camping trip of the season went very well & the weather was the best I can remember for a Memorial Day weekend in Montana. I racked up 115 miles on the Maverick & put it to the test in the massive amount of snow left in the high country. All I can say is WOW.....that thing will blow through some serious snow. Fun, fun, fun !! Anyways, I do have some pics to share as well as a short cheesy cell phone video of my campsite.

Sweet set up Wayne! I've never stayed at that campground, looks like you had it about to yourself! Why did yo go Can-am? Thought you used to have a Yamaha wheeler and I saw you have Ditch Pickles for sleds (I have a buddy who calls them that, kinda funny  ;)). I think Ski-doo/Can-am put out some good machines, just curious what you think...

Mike- Awesome!

@ G fish - It's illegal to take the Maverick on those trails. It's to wide at 60". I've taken the ATV into Schwinegar Lake & Lake of the Woods several times & I believe they are the only lakes you can take OHV's into off the Scenic Byway now. Yes, the trails in that area are very rough !!

@ Mike - Thank you.....It was a great outing. So relaxing to get away from town, texts & a ringing phone lol. Loved the Morel vid !!

@ mr.clean - Thank you for the kind words sir !!

@ Kyle - I actually have two Yamaha ATV's. 2014 Grizzly 700 & a 2014 Grizzly 550. I sold my 2009 Yamaha Rhino 700 & purchased the Can Am last July. Went with the Can Am because the newest Yamaha had a hydraulic clutch & shifter. Didn't want to be thinking about shifting & what gear I'm in while out enjoying a ride. Laziness comes with getting older lol. Very happy with the Maverick. The Rotax engine is smooth/powerful & the suspension is like riding in a Cadillac. The seats are comfortable & the tilt steering wheel has the gauge cluster attached to it which is a nice feature. My buddy runs the Can Am/Ski Doo dealership. It was the last 2016 he had in stock, he wanted it gone because the 2017's were on there way & he gave me a pretty killer deal. Yes, that also swayed my decision lol !! As far as the Ditch Pickles  :roflmao: go, I got them in February of this year. They were leftover 2016's (M8 162" & M8 153"), I saved $7K on the pair & they threw a few goodies into the deal as well. The wife & I are pretty much beginners at the sport of snowmobiling. We had no experience with the fancy modern sleds & after looking at the different brands we went with the brand that gave us the best deal on two sleds. Now we're just hoping some experience will make us decent riders & we can enjoy the sport together. After all.....that's what it's all about.....spending quality time together !!

Take Care & Play Safe Everyone !!

Thread has been quiet the past week. Hope everyone has been out enjoying the great outdoors & not working lol !!

Ohhhhh boyyyyy.....gotta work three night shifts then I'm gonna burn 40 hours of vacation time & I'll have 14 days off. I'm actually going to pull the 5th-wheel out tomorrow morning & I'll more than likely just drive out to the trailer every morning when I get off & catch some z's. Adds 40 miles roundtrip to the drive, but what the heck.....right. Plans are to do a ton of riding/exploring, get some fishing in, hit the Philipsburg Brewery a few times  ;)2 to fill the growlers with some Razzu/Haybag & just relax enjoying some time away from work. I'll actually have cell service this outing, so I'm hoping to check in & post some pics while I'm out. Not going to forget the GoPro this time, so hopefully I can get some good footage of some riding & the impressive snowpack still remaining. I know one of the places I want to go still had 5 - 6 feet of snow as of a week ago when a friend was there playing around on his snowmobile. Typically can't get into the lakes up there until last week of June, but it's looking like probably 2nd week of July this year. I remember years ago we didn't get in there until the 1st week of August. Anyways, I hope everyone is enjoying their summer, take care & play safe !!

Let's keep this thread alive.....still some time before 1st ice !!

Well..... I've been sitting here in the trailer since 4:45pm waiting for the rain to stop. Watched a couple movies & had some popcorn. There is probably 2" of standing water around the picnic table & the fire ring. I've only experienced rain like this once before & I was in Seattle at the time. Morning everyone !! Just got off 6 straight night shifts. What a fiasco early this morning after the earthquake hit. Lets hope there's better days ahead !!

Glad to see the air quality had improved overnight when I arose this morning. Was just terrible last night. Could hardly see & ash was falling out of the sky covering everything. The fires in the Rock Creek area (Whetstone Fire being one of them) flared up yesterday, which was the cause of our poor air. I hear the Moose Lake area was put on mandatory evacuations & restrictions were also put on camping in that area.

Hoping to get out camping here in the next couple weeks. I average about 52 nights in the trailer per season & I'm sitting at a mere 23 right now  :(.

So.....I'm leaving work Tuesday morning & the dash in the truck says "Check Right Rear Tire Pressure". I check the DIC & it shows a big fat zero for pressure in that tire. Exit the truck, glance at it, give it a kick & all seems fine. Manually check it with a gauge & it has 58psi. Hit the tire shop this morning & found out that these tire pressure monitors have small batteries in them & that one was dead. Hmmm.....Did not know that, not that I ever thought about it. Also found out that the TPM's must be replaced since the batteries in them cannot be replaced. Anyways, with them all being 9 years old now, I just had all 4 replaced. Figure since one died the rest are more than likely soon to follow. By the way, those little TPM's were $236 / $59 each !!

Have a great day everyone.....the weekend is almost here !!

G fish nice photos your dog looks quite comfortable in his bed. SpitzoMT  I hope the fire crews can get the fires extinguished so not to much of the wild areas of your state are destroyed. Those TPM's can drive you nuts ones on my vehicles always get set off by cold temperatures.

Wow.....How time flies.....Can't believe it's been a month since my last post. With the poor air quality & the fact that I'm "unlucky" enough to have asthma, I've been putting a pretty strict limit on my outdoor activities. We did make it out camping along the scenic byway between Wise River/Polaris for 8 days at the end of August & actually had great air quality for 6 of those days. The wife has pics she still needs to go thru & hopefully I'll have some to post soon. Don't know about y'all.....but I'm ready for some snow/ice because snowmobiling & fishing the hardwater sure sounds good right now !!

Here's a couple pics from one of my cameras lastnight. Walked up the sidewalk right between the garage & my truck. Pretty cool !!

That's a very welcome sight there Mike. There's at least 2" of wet snow on my truck right now. Very nice to see, but the best part is the good clean air to breath. The 3 months of smoke filled skies was getting a bit old.

It's funny you say that Mike.....Couple people I know mentioned the same thing.....Said the number of wolves they saw this bow season was quite a bit higher as compared to years past.....Makes ya wonder if all the fires had them hanging in areas that they might normally pass thru.....Who knows.....Did you have any luck getting a bull this year ??

A guy I work with who lives at G'Town Lake, Denton's Point to be exact, told me Stuart Mill Bay had ice on it when he left for work Tuesday afternoon !!
It's been real windy the past 8 - 10 hours & the temp is 40 degrees right now, so hopefully that ice holds & starts working it's way across the lake.
Looks like the forecast will be more favorable for growing ice starting Saturday.....if the weatherman's correct that is !!

I looked back at all the pages the other day when I was wishing I was a fishing.  glad that you started the post lots of good memories and pictures as well. Love the badger pic. my dad had a badger hat when I was a kid, we always got a good laugh out of it. this year me and the kid ran into a porky pine the first we have seen alive. think most are road kill or dog finds them the wrong way.

I understand some folks not wanting deer near their homes because of damage to landscaping and vegetable  gardens. Also always possibility of motor vehicle accident and contracting Lyme or other tick borne disease present on the deer.

Yea, that's some big country, lots of places to see, lots of places you can go to. The humbug spires are cool, but not sure you can drive to them anymore, could always hit Melrose or twin bridges for lunch, lots of possibilities there.

The wife and it took a couples trip to Bozeman. Paid a visit to Brutus the bear at the grizzly encounter and palisade falls and hyalite reservoir. Fun trip I just wished I would have brought a rod. Thinking about coming back to ice fish hyalite this next winter. Don’t know anything about trout but I have a few months to do some research.

Piltz, excellent work on the morels! I'm currently enjoying a late-night meal sprinkled with some (admittedly...significa ntly smaller...yes there's some envy there).  We were blessed with no smoke and fire in my neck of the woods this summer which was fantastic for a change.  However, the lack of nearby burns to hunt next spring might cancel that out!

The freezer and pantry are full, just killing time until the ice shows up. I've got one deer tag left to keep me occupied until then.
