Your Best Bluegill Jig?
« on: Feb 11, 2014, 08:18 PM »
What bluegill jig or hook do you have your best success with?  I have the best luck with no jig and only a waxy threaded on a #12 aberdeen hook.

Genz Worm in chartreuse with a waxie.  Yet killed them one day with a Lindy Rattler and a waxie when they wouldn't touch the Genz worm ???

Gill Pill size 12 or 14 depends on the fish as to what color, but firetiger, bumble bee,Bl/Wh,and glow white have been good, only use wax worms for gills, Clean Ratso's Chartreuse,or glow bright, this year added a lot of Lindy's Toads and Bug jigs to my box andI'm  well pleased with them,I use 14's Orange/brown,Gr/Chart., Yellow/pink have iced plenty of bulls.I almost always use a horazonal jig for gills.

It changes day to day for me but glow red and chart seems to be pretty consistant. mainly gill pills and diamond jigs. Although I will say I have not had the numbers of gills this year as I have in the past.

I was on a bus and just happened to be sitting on a news paper. This guy came up and asked. "Are you reading that ?"
I said  yes, stood up, turned the page and sat back down.

Today it was a size 10 green tiger tunsten jig in glow and a size 12 orange/yellow gill pill clone.  Both with a waxie t-boned on the hook.  Caught 30 nice gills in less than 90 minutes.   ;D

Fished yesterday 11:30 till 6:30,they hit a clean chartruse Ratso' and a size 12 Toad Gr/Chart with half a glow Ratso's tail with 2 spikes. Fish where very fussy a lot of lookers, but 24 bulls 8- 9.5 inchers went home plus 4 decent crappie. Seems weird but you got to keep playing with these late season ice gills. I'm into trying to see what triggers them to hit,I had 10 rods rigged with 10 different jigs and only two combos worked. I cut 30 plus holes and only caught keepers out of 4 holes. It's more like work than fishing, sure glad I got a Jiffy pro 4,the beast is heavy but really eats the ice.

I use them all and have them all and if I do not have it,I buy it.  BUT the best bluegill jig that I have owned that made me money while the others just set there was the (are you ready?) Size 12 orange rocker with either a small minnow or wax worm or spike. That is when nothing else works for me. I do not know why I use all the others when this one works the best for me. Just a thing that I do. When nothing else works.

#14 Lindy Toad in green & pink with a Custom Jigs n Spins Wedgie or Trigger X Wax Tail and if they're tight lipped like I experienced yesterday, I use a wacky rigged waxie in place of the plastic. I catch a fair share of gills on a small spoon with a gold dropper chain as well. I use the spoon often to fire the fish back up if the jig isn't working.
