I'd ever seen anything like it either. I did some research on the net and found that it takes fairly warm water, covered by a thin layer of ice and very cold air temps. I've got some great full size shots that I use as my background. I took this pic of another type of hoar frost last winter too:

That's a neat pic too... I love winter scenery on the lakes - all the snow and frosted trees - absolutely gorgeous and pretty tough to beat IMO!

I don't know Jack about photography with digital cameras except how to take a picture but the pics from Blaine are really of amazing quality.  What's the deal, is it a camera with tons of pixels or is it just using more pixels  per image and just taking a larger image and then downsizing it?  I have a  Sony Mavica which is an old school digital camera but I would love to be able to take pics like Blaine is posting.  Anybody know the deal, how about eyedoktr, I think he's a phototgraphy guy?

slipbob, without knowing what kind of camera Blaine has, you are correct about the pixels - the more you have, the better the picture quality.  But it also has to do with the type of editting software, and the type of file you create, how you edit the picture, and how much you move when taking the pic.
For quality pics, I would:
1.) check the cameras settings and set them to the highest quality (least amount of pics per disk) I know my high quality will fit about 80 pics on my disk, but the best quality pics will fit about 16. (and I think the pic type goes from jpg to tif, which is better for editting in).
2.) Use a tripod.
3.) Use quality editting software like photoshop.
4.) Do not edit .gif photos - change them to RGB mode and either .jpg file type (OK) or .TIF file type (better) or in a program like photoshop, PSD (best)
6.) Save the file as a jpg for display after the pic has been editted, and use the least amount of compression, (which allows the most amount color possible in the image).

Muddler, I think every guy on the board was thinking the same thing. She is a cutie holding a fish!

"I fish because I love to; because I love the environs where trout are found, because I suspect that men are going along this way for the last time, and I  don't want to waste the trip; maybe one day I will catch a mermaid; and finally, not because I regard fishing as being so terribly important, but because I suspect that so m

Great shots everyone, lots of fun on the ice last year.
Congrats on your first pike Bobman. ;)
Blaine what a great pile of walleye, it's not often you find them that agressive in the winter. What was the secret lure that night?
