My best day at the Mile today
« on: Feb 20, 2012, 01:25 PM »
Got to the Mile at 5:30 AM and it was already breezy.Had a line in by 6:30 AM and did not mark a fish until about 8:30 AM. Had a tip-up set up with a sucker in 5' of water, nothing. Yesterday The
fish were most active from 6:30 AM to 7:30 AM but I only managed a 12" stocker for the day. I moved my shelter and my tip-up.No sooner did I sit down and flag up! A nice 28" pike. Reset the
tip up  with a 9" sucker and within 10 minutes landed my largest pike yet at 34" and 12.25 lbs. Caught both before 8 AM. The smaller pike was 6.5 lbs. Caught four stockers, left before 10 AM. The wind was howling Tight lines

A nice day Mark!

They are good eatin' if you can fillet them right. Many call it "Poor Man's Lobster" and is true if it's filleted and cooked properly.

Wow what a couple of beasts!

Did I tell you there's a tipup use fee of $20 per inch on any pike over 30"?  ;D

Awesome day, Mark. A couple nice ones for the smoker. You are going to share, right?

Sweet!  2 gooduns the same day for the fat-bow-getter!  And yep, boil those fillets in salt water for 3 minutes, then cook, you'll think you're eating walleye!

Great job on the gators!  And way to use the tipups too!
Mind if I ask where you got the suckers?  I've heard most people use waterdogs up there, but using suckers sound more familiar to me.  Suckers are legal up there?
Flags up, gentlemen!!!

Above 7,000 ' or west of the continental divide, you can't use live fish. They put pike in Eleven Mile Reservoir to control the suckers, but I can't use live ones.
Go figure! A friend of mine caught them in a private pond for me.

Nice Pike!  If you are willing to share some information... how deep were you fishing when you caught those pike? I have been struggling to catch any pike at the mile for the past few years. Any info will help! Thanks!

5' of water, with very little weed cover. The bigger the sucker, the bigger the pike. The larger pike had an 8" trout in it's stomach.
