Propane Can Freezing
« on: Oct 13, 2017, 12:50 PM »
Anyone have suggestions on how to keep Coleman propane can from freezing? Ran into the problem last year when it got real cold out the can froze to where gas wouldn't come out. Hopefully I can find a solution before winter hits. -17 is the ice shack makes for a long day lol

Yup, keep the propane tank as warm as you can.  Wrap it with insulating material an even a hand warmer taped to it will help when it’s bitter cold.

Good thing I checked the just posted warning box DN, I was just ready to post the hand warmer idea using old tube socks for the " insulating " material.

I've noticed this happens when the tank is low or almost empty especially with the 1lb bottles. Just bring extras.

Iv'e seen the same problem and solved it easily enough with a large metal coffee can. I put about 2" of lake water in the can and then put the can over top of my heater until it is at about body temperature. Then I place the propane bottle in the can and the sluggish heat output picks up as if it were summer time. This method works for me because I use a single burner propane camp stove where the bottle stays in a vertical position. This may not work for every setup but you should still be able to warm up a frozen bottle by this method.

Northland tackle has the best heater for the bottles,
Not bulky, fit good.
Have used them at -17*.
