Hali's
« on: Nov 27, 2022, 07:25 PM »
I've never fished with them and intend to try this year ... I've seen my buddy use them in past years and he did really well BUT, he's also had the chain and hook break at times, we assumed on bigger fish.  Do you guys that fish with them buy/bring extra chains/hooks or do you swap them out with stronger hooks and chains before you start fishing them ? Thanks in advance .....

I take the chain off and use a small piece of flourocarbon from the jig to the hook, you can use whatever size hook and LB flouro depending what you are fishing for.

Thanks ... I was wondering about that too .... I didn't know if the chain/hook "made" the lure, or if it was the jig itself that made the whole think work  .....

I've never really had a problem with them. I do carry a few spare chains which I've also used on other lures. I don't think the hooks they use are of the highest quality and I have switched a few out with Gamatzu's.  Not really my go-to lure but I have done ok especially if I want to fish deep and a micro lure takes a while to get down there

I have switched some of my single chain/hooks to chains with a beaded treble hook on some of my Halis. The seem to hook up a bit better.
It seems to go from zero to hero all some have to do is lie.

The Hali is a favorite, it's an awesome lure!  I never have had the chain or hook break?

I only use them for Smelt. Keep the chain and hook. No issues.

I got into a Hali kick a couple years ago and it’s been my go to jig since (before that it was the micro tungsten jigs).

I have had a chain break on me after catching a 13” perch on Cando. But I’m sure it was extrapolated by removing the hook as well. I just get the replacement chains and fish them without worry. They out fish most other jigs I use so if I go through a chain or two a season it doesn’t bother me.

Another good chain lure is the Shuck's jigger minnow.

I've been using the Johnson Snare spoon for a couple years and really like them for the price, I carry extra chains.

I use the snares, too. They work just as well as the legit Halis in my experience, and they're locally available here.

The point of the hook will swing up and catch the chain.
I only use them now if I have my camera in use, that way I can see if its fouled up.
I have had several chains come apart and hooks snap off.
I will admit, they work when they work.
I mostly use the jointed clam jigs instead.

That's why I ended up using them, found them in a store here cheap and thought I'd try them

Those Smelt Sticks look similar to a Sting Nose lure, yes?  Somewhat similar, anyway
