It doesn't matter what knot I use or what gadget/gizmo I try to make it easier, I am all thumbs when it comes to tying tiny az jigs to line that is finer than my hair...which I don't have much of. And it's not that my hands or fingers are big 'cause they're not, and my eyes are good...with glasses. But paint dries faster than the time it takes me to tie on a friggin' hook!!! We all enjoy ice fishing but there is always that one "thing" we struggle with that makes us want to ( 😡fill in the blank 😡 ). So what is your one bane to ice fishing that, at times, puts you on the brink of insanity? My rant is over ..until I start tying more jigs.🙄
-
Fishing in deep snow ie 12+”. Takes more effort to stay mobile and punch lots of holes searching for the hotspot.
-
Slush, especially DEEP slush that is over my Sorels. We had lots of it last year and made things miserable and untenable.
Hoping for better days this year.
-
I hate finding a grid of set-lines sitting right on top of my favorite jigging spot. Our lakes are giant, but rather than figuring out their own spots people would rather follow my snowmachine track to my holes and fish exactly where I like to fish. One thing soft-water has going for it is doesn't leave evidence.
Speaking of evidence, I also hate finding people's garbage on the ice.
-
Ok mine is getting to the lake super early in the morning to find out theres a tournament.the tournament isnt what bothers me tho ,its the early morning loud drunks!!jmo
-
I hate when there is NO ICE!!!😡
-
Pennsylvania for not letting us use any form of motorized/powered assistance to get on and off the ice. Really sucks when your mobility is impaired.

I despise both of these things.

When the beer freezes and gets to be more slush than beer. How am I supposed to pound that beer in one gulp when it's half slush? Then I end up going for the whiskey a lot sooner than I should in the day. It's a vicious cycle.

🤣 How about something in between beer and whiskey...like schnapps 🤔
-
Michigan winters!!!! Cold enough to get some ice, then has to warm up and rain, then get cold again and start the cycle over! Oh, and the fact that the ice fishing season is too short here.

SW Ohio ice fishing, or the lack thereof!! :%$#!:
-
I’d have to go with deep snow or slush! Those are my biggest peeves. Walk up to a cleared hole, but then stepping near it causes slush to fill it in.
-
Wind! There is nothing better than getting to the ramp, the sun is just pinking the western horizon air is dead calm, get the flip over ready, off cutting some exploratory holes, the sun comes up over the horizon, your around 60 yards from your shack and whoosh the wind comes up and if you’re lucky the shanty was close to some standing timber down wind. Cause of Course since the the wind was dead calm and you were so antsy to find fish you forgot how the wind comes up with the sun!
Keep it safe! JDL

Seeing nets out and frozen beer.

X2 and I would still sit right on my spot even if I have to go in the middle of the sets. And the walk period.
-
Snow and wind. Some winters we don't get much snow, but there always seems to be wind. Did I mention that I hate wind?
-
I just move off to the next spot, first come first served , if you share a good spot that you found , why wouldn’t they set on it ,there is a word for this behavior

Sorry to say don’t share unless you want to be taken advantage of. Lots of folks don’t get it! And if it happens like Mr. Young says walk on.
Keep it safe! JDL
-
I agree if you share you run a risk , but you do find out who you can trust

having to trudge through snow across the ice. more than 3" is a pain in my ass. As for you Knot problem, try the Polomar knot. if you can't get the line through the jig eye a 2nd time, use the cinch knot. Those are the only 2 knots I use
-
I'm usually pretty quick to be on first ice however my pain is this. I walk out with a life vest on chisel and stop check every few feet have ice cleats on and ice picks in case of a breakthrough get out there start to fish never fails every year some clown comes out no chisel, picks or life vest, tennis shoes on scoots along out to me and asks how thick the ice is I always reply well when you came out the water was moving up and down my hole about 2.5 inches of ice. I fish alone a lot after that comment ;D I try to be safe if i'm going out there but to not even be prepared is beyond me.

It’s amazing how safe someone can feel just because there’s someone else out there. A few years ago, a bay on a lake here kept getting blown open. So you could go from 15 inches of ice to 8-10 real fast. We drove out right to the edge where it was still 15 inches and a pickup came barreling out, after we had setup, right in front of us. The ice was moving. They were on ten inches of ice. They jumped out, drilled a hole, walked backwards to the truck and drove out in reverse!
-
I hate seeing trash, if you bring in out take it with you.
I also hate slush.
-
Yep almost every trip I pick up trash 😡
-
Setting up in my go-to spot where I usually can count on getting steady action with pike and crappies - and going all day to get skunked. Happens at least once a season and I can't figure out why the fish totally leave the area occassionaly ???
-
As much as I dislike dealing with slush covered ice, I'm going with the sudden finding of a snow covered 10" augered hole with my size 9 boot... :woot:

I got rid of my 10" auger a few years ago after going through it with a foot of slush on the ice. Man did that do a number on my knee! I'm changing my answer to this!

I had a situation last year that involved both. My size 10 boot went through a 6" hole!! I did not think that was possible but it happened. The hole had about 6" of shush on it (I drilled the hole) My foot went through the hole before I knew what happened. It did not want to come out though. I was freaking out! I had my wife hand me the spud bar and I started trying to chip the ice around my boot, that lasted about 2 chops before I figured that wasn't a great idea. I ended up reaching down the hole and unlacing my boot (had the wife hold the laces so I would loose the boot) I was able to slip my foot out enough to get it out of the hole. The ice was only about 8" thick, don't think if it would have went through if the ice was thicker. It happened so fast I didn't know what the hell happened. My leg was pretty bruised up for a month or so.
I hate slushy beer too! ;D ;D

I remain open minded on slushy beer, certain in the knowledge that a slushy beer is far better than no beer at all.

Defiantly better than warm beer!
Gunflint, I was raised up in your neck of the woods in Babbitt. (not sure where I'm going to grow up)

Best wishes in growing up. I have grown and and now in the process of fading. My children are now stronger than me.
It is a blessing that "Age and guile beats youth and enthusiasm every time."

The one that gets me is when we're having a nice normal winter plenty of ice plenty of snow....
Skiers are happy snowmobilers are happy ice fishermen are happy......
Then in the middle of January we get a warm spell and several days of rain that just ruins it for everyone.
Then to top it off as I'm in the local grocery store the clerk at the register will start talking about how nice it is it warmed up and she's so happy it's warm out.
When I tell her I think it sucks she's like all you must be one of those people who can afford a snow machine.
Well I enjoy several winter Hobbies to include snowmobiles and ice fishing.
And I hope you enjoy your ride home tonight I hope you don't go in the ditch on these slick arse roads.
I mean come on now it's not like it's warm enough for you to go to the beach and have a cookout or go ride your bicycle or whatever your favorite summer activity is.
If you like a warm winter move someplace where it's warm in the winter. Or at least move there for the winter time.

I hate it, when I'm driving and all I see is clear black ice from out of now where on the river...I'm going to back up in the same direction I came in...
Once I went to drill to check the ice thickness...2" LOL. Didn't have a death wish that day. ;D

I was out once with a buddy of mine trying to find this hotspot on this lake that his brother had told us about.
But we are having trouble finding the old Beaver Lodge he had described as the place to fish because of the snow.
So my buddy suggest we try another spot where he had been fishing a week or so ago with some of the guys from work.
We get over there and find his old holes and they're looking kind of weird oblong shaped.
There is 10 inches of ice everywhere else we had drilled.
So my buddy grabs the power auger fires it up and he's through in about a second or two.
He just looks over at me and goes what the heck?
I didn't say anything I just grabbed him and jerked him onto safe ice.
Turns out this lake is full of muskrats and they had been keeping the holes open and widened an area around these old fishing holes.
Off to the side was 10 inches of ice but where my buddy was standing was just over an inch.

I got to go with this.. I can work around just about anything else, but slush is misery to the tenth power.

The fishing crew who are 70 yards apart from each other and have to yell their stupid jokes to each other all day across the lake. Comedy is a tough gig , if it were easy everyone would be doing it for a profession. Not everyone can be George Carlin so shut up and fish.

I tried stand up, they told me to sit down. ;D ;) ;D

I hate when I start a movie I wanted to watch and because I got half my brain in Ice Shanty not noticing for a half an hour it was on Telemundo ::) I finally get it when Bruce Willis says, "Is this gonna be a problem?"in Spanish... :P

Number 1 has to be deep slush/water on the ice.
A close second is finding garbage.
And number 3, at all times of year and all of my favorite things to do, i hate Wind.
-
I hate when I get up at 3 am, travel with my 4 wheeler in tow, get parked, and just to find out my battery is dead. I had that happen last year, I have a new battery now lol.

LOL...yeah once, I totally forgot the auger on two hour drive trip to...Well that was a fun unproductive drive. >:(
waste of gas money...two hour drive of shame back.
Note to self...do my equipment check and check it twice over. Walk through in my head...how I'm going to be fishing...and check it over again.

I have one more but unrelated to ice fishing...sort of. USE THE DAMN SPELL CHECK IN YOUR POSTS!!! Every phone and computer has it. I didn't have anything close to that when I went to school...we had to learn it. Call me the grammar or spelling police...I don't care. Very sad.☹

i hate the same thing during ice and open water seasons... god damn work! i suffer the torments of the damned when im at work making a stupid living when i could be fishing. 10 inches of slush on 6 inches of rotten ice with 50 mph wind is still better than not fishing at work. it gets worse every year. also trash i really hate trash.

Finding a limit of fish just left on the ice, abandoned by some idiot who decided he was to lazy to clean them.

Around here that’s called culling or controlling invasive species ::)

Deep slush ,wind, trash and people that I don't know touching my stuff . I had a guy walk up to my flip over and unzipped my door and asked me how was the fishing was going I told him to back off and zip the door up or he was going to lose an eye from my gaff. People have no respect or morals, I don't mind if somebody asked hows it going but don't touch my chit. I will help others out if they show some respect and not acting like a entitled jackwag.

When I'm getting all the ice stuff organized and I CAN'T FIND MY DANG SPUD! :%$#!: Especially early (like right now, can't put my hands on it) and late ice. Doesn't help my stuff is scattered between here Oconomowoc and Three Lakes.
If I can't find it I will buy one. Of course, at some point that will go missing as well. Probably bought at least 4 in the last 20 years and the only one I can for sure put my hands on is the next one I'll buy in the store. Think I'll name that one "Number Five". ::)
-
Trash is my big one. The other is when I'm catching and guys start moving in on me. Go find your own fish.

social media spot beggars and freeloaders. I love helping people get on fish without specifically drawing them a map but am pretty generous with information. But cripes..some people don't want to do any work for themselves.
and even on the ice. we don't have huge bodies of water all over, just mostly borrow pits, and smaller local lakes, and the river backwaters. when i'm on a 10 acre body of water all by myself and watch other people just make their way over to fish 5' from me. I just kind of giggle. It no longer bothers me like it did whant i was younger but is still comical.
-
I guess living in NW Iowa it'd be wind, but what I also hate are the people in my area who marks spots publicly on Navionics. Mark your own spots locally on your phone and don't tell the world.
-
I hate it ... When these so called meteorologist predict a cold winter and get it wrong.... again!!!!!
smitty
-
I have to agree with the slush comments. Major pain in the rear to get around and to keep the kid dry and happy.
Trash on the ice would be a close second.
-
Driving my 3/4 ton diesel pickup out on 24" of ice on the Mississippi and then moving on to the next spot only to stumble on to 3" of ice along the way.

Yup, #1 most miserable scenario on the ice is slush.
-
Don't have to deal with slush as much here as some of you guys, but it does suck. Years ago night fishing I feel in deep slush my partner thought I went threw the ice. It ended fishing.
-
That one year when it snowed heavily before the lakes frozen up. I went to upper red lake to fish, cuz the crappie boom was then. Went to drill a spot. Thought that the deep snow was just deep. Dropped the lure down, funny it didn't go down very far. started to scoop up the slush. Was scooping slush for like 20 minutes. Hmmm that's a bit too much, slush from out of one hole. Kept scooping out more and more slush.
Then only then, realized. That there's such a thing as a slush pocket, wind blown under the ice. Dropped the ducer, turn up the gain and...it was showing a cloud of slush extending another 6+ feet deep. Dropped the whole ducer cord length down the hole and then soft thump into slush pocket. Slush pocket confirmed. Biggest slush cloud underwater ever!
