Hand auger
« on: Feb 18, 2018, 02:31 PM »
What would be a good hand auger to get, at least for early season when im walking onto the ice, and what size should i get so i could pop a few holes around without being too tired to do any fishing?

I would suggest the Nero Mini. 5,6 or 7". http://htice.com/mini-nero-telescopic-russian-hand-auger/

Fine-Bore, Neros or Nils, whatever you are thinking of getting, start by looking at one with an offset handle, so that you use both your arms and not just one.

The first thing I would look for is ease of conversion to drill powered.

Anything with the offset handle like the nills or Nero, then get a drill adapter/clam plate and a quality brushless drill with at least 700in/lb torque

I recently purchased a Nils 6" hand auger. I must say I'm blown away how easy it is to use.  My 11yo son easily drills holes though 16" plus of ice.  I bought this brand because of all the good reviews and the ability to use the drill as it comes equipped for that purpose. It is extremely light and sharp.  After using this auger I see no need to even think of bringing the drill, batteries, etc.. The best piece of equipment I have purchased in years.

This in a five to six inch.

I like the 7 " lazer,  draw a 5 , 6 & a 7" circle and decide what size hole you'd want to fish out of

If $100-$200 is too steep for your budget, just get a classic Mora and call it a day. $50 at a sponsor site (FishUSA). Early ice, you don’t need anything special or expensive. Offset handles help but aren’t necessary, especially for your needs. I’d go with a 6”. They work great on a drill setup also if that’s something that would interest you in the future.
