I'll let him add the story about this great bird. I'm just helping post them up. Whoops!, he gave away his hotspot in the first one. Bare with me this will take a few minutes. 44 (http://i841.photobucket.com/albums/zz339/44North1/P4030058_zps557qm5jr.jpg) (http://s841.photobucket.com/user/44North1/media/P4030058_zps557qm5jr.jpg.html)

Bands on both legs. That eagle likes bling!

Wow! Great pictures. Beautiful bird. Thanks for posting.

Great pictures woodchip .
Woodchip has had quite a relationship with this bird over the years .
Here are a few he has shared with me from the last few years

Beautiful pics! Such a magnificent animal.

Salty who would you contact to find out more about the bands on this bird? May be able to find out how old he(she) is or where it was hatched.
-
He means business in your second picture Gasblaster.

Seems you can email mdifw with a pic, best if the markings on the band can be seen.

This eagle was banded in Maine silver band, The red band means he was banded in New York, Joefishmore fed this bird on Big Sebago a couple of days ago .No one fed him on Sebago so he came over for some W.Perch probably 10 miles as the Crow flies. I have had contact with this bird now for 3 years. He ate one 12" fish and two 8" perch before he left. Its days like these that making sitting over a jig stick special. Thanks Guys for sharing with all.

On Sebago today....good ice....melting along the shore....fed the eagle another Togue..
Found what appeared to be a large smelt , 8 inches or so, in the digestive system of one of
our togue. Maybe someone was using them for bait in the last day or so.
-
Great pictures Woodchip.......Thanks for sharing!
-
I know this bird too! 3rd year for me.

Beautiful pictures for sure. He looks like he follows you around woodchip

Outstanding pictures!
-
Nice pics fer sure
Maybe he should change his screen name to The Eagle Whisperer

I read that Woodchip knows from band ciolor that the eagle was banded in Maine and in NY. If he knows the nest location(s) used by that eagle, he could call the closest IFW regional office with the nest location, and they may be able to tell him when & where that eagle was banded. Possibly one band would have been when it was a young-of-the- year eagle which would provide its age. If the closest regional office is in Gray, call 657-2345 and ask for the wildlife biologist. Good luck!
-
Fantastic pics! Thanks for sharing.
-
He means business in your second picture Gasblaster.
He sure does. Those talons are sharper than ice picks on a snowmobile. He may not have "4-wheel drive", but he doesn't spin when travelling on the ice!
-
I think he likes me better.
I feed him bigger fish.
And togue don't have all those undigestable scales that white perch do.
-
I've done a little volunteer work at the Maine Wildlife Park and have been able to get up-close and personal with a bald eagle, you can't describe how strong those birds are, and until you've been that close you don't realize how big they really are, they are an amazing bird !!!
-
Great pictures! I love the one where he is walking in the water...looks like he's got his wool pants on

-
Fantastic pictures!! Thanks for sharing.

I carry my camera everywhere I go .Its an Olympus sp100 ee with a 50 optical zoom.

I did get a closeup of Brenda at the meet and great.

Would this picture be Chesuncook?? I have a cool picture with an identical background
-
A set-up with a GoPro and a fish might get you close enough to read the bands. Could be dangerous for the camera though. Similar to a trail camera over bear bait.

This was taken infront of my camp off the Golden rd at mile 42. Caribou lake. (Verrillville)

I was there before the Golden rd. Got Elected mayor .

Spectacular! I think those r real. Sorry Brenda :o
-
Awesome Eagle pics. I caught a salmon a few years ago that was scared up. I thought it was from a prop but it had markings on borh sides.Think it was from an eagle but the salmon got away.
-
I released a Trout in Churchill lake years ago and it was 50' behind he boat while trolling and an Eagle picked it off some slick. All those 23 to 33 inch Togue in Sebago will be easy prey for the eagle this summer.
-
Not sure an eagle could fly with more than a 5#er. Tried to resuscitate an 8#er trolling lake x one summer and after15 minutes plus gave up. Big Eagle was on it right after it went belly up. It couldnt lift it but swooped away til it drifted to shore at least an hour later. Tried to get my dB back but ran into shallows.
-
I have had 8+ lb trout in my farm pond and Ospreys will lug them off .An Eagle is bigger ,I think an eagle could carry off a 10lb fish with ease.
-
Ospreys are Osome Chip.
-
Here's one for you Woodchip. (http://i841.photobucket.com/albums/zz339/44North1/post-18992-0-87311800-1428787253_zpsjoeh6vgp.jpg) (http://s841.photobucket.com/user/44North1/media/post-18992-0-87311800-1428787253_zpsjoeh6vgp.jpg.html)

Is this how they catch fish to feed the crews on big ships?
-
The photo had no info with it but I would guess it was up in Alaska. Probably a ship like MGK was on this past summer.
-
Wow, lined up like seagulls.

I haven't posted in a while but the guy I share my office with just mentioned seeing a post on an ice fishing site about a banded eagle. Most people on here don't know that I'm a wildlife biologist for a small nonprofit. We band most of the eagles in the state so I have some info on this one. It was banded as a chick at treasure island on Square Pond in Shapleigh June 2, 2006 it was the only chick in the nest that year. at the time of banding it was 6 weeks old. we believe it to be nesting on/near Little Sebago but the nest site has yet to be found. Great pictures! if you have more I would love to see them. Were the pictures taken on Little Sebago?
-
I have been in contact with this bird on Little Sebago upper lake. I see him soaring between Little Sebago and the town of Dry mills often. Over the Game preserve area.
-
Thanks loonman for the history. Great to get some info. 44

If that eagle was nesting could we expect that it would have carried a fish off to the nest instead of eating it there on the ice ?
-
Maybe we should just bump this. I haven't had a close fly by yet this year though I left them some treats.

I love GasBlaster's 2nd pic...tough looking bird....all awesome pictures
-
Those are outstanding pictures.
Did I read correctly that the bird with the red band was banded in New York.
-
I originally though that but the Bio that tag the bird tagged it in the nest in lake in Shapleigh I believe around 7 yrs ago.
-
That is cool. I didn't know how far they moved around.
-
great pics thats an awesome bird those talons are crazy
-
Ne3w eagle pictures are not with the old ones.
-
Great Pictures thanks for posting
-
That is cool. I didn't know how far they moved around.
Several winters ago, Maine Fish and Wildlife established an eagle feeding station at Cobscook Bay State Park in Edmunds, using carcasses of deer, beaver, coyotes. Biologists read the eagle band numbers from a blind, using spotting scopes. The interesting thing was that some of the 25 or so eagles had been banded as far away as Michigan and Wisconsin, then flew to open coastal water to feed in the winter.
-
Great pics, thanks for sharing!
-

Ha, must be Square Pond. They have done some tagging here numerous times before. We have a family that has nested in the same spot on an island for years. I'm sure I watched that one as a baby many times in the summer and winter. Also probably fed him his share of perch and pickerel.
-
That's exactly what the Biologist told me. I have had as many 7 eagles on beaver carcasses or road kill deer at the same time in front of camp on Caribou lake over the years.
-
Last saturday I had a flag and caught a white perch .Well a eagle new it because it was watching me. I threw it on the ice it came in but we were to close and it landed in a tree. A little while I checked the other traps further away from the perch. The eagle swooped in and grabbed it and it went back to the tree to eat it. Was awesome to see, highlight of the day.
-
My wife just showed me your picture of the strutting eagle through water on the ice Woodchip. He has made it to Facebook with credits to you from Iceshanty. Schoodic Lakehouse posted it I believe.

That's it GasBlaster.
-
My camera is an Olympus sp100ee With an 50x zoom I don't have to carry a lot of different lenses with me . It fits in my wind breaker pocket . It is so nice to have the fast acting camera and not having to reach for a different lens. My macro zoom also works very well . When traveling around up north I am able to be ready for near and far shots. I do take a lot of different people out and about for a day of photo shoots.
-
Looks like your not just local legend anymore Bob.
Those pictures are awesome! I saved them when you first posted them and look at them often. A good friend of mine takes care of Lawrence, the bald eagle at the Maine wildlife park, I've been wanting to catch up with her to show them to her.
-
Thanks for sharing your Great Eagle pictures - Now to tell you the response to the picture of the Eagle strutting on the ice that I posted on my Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/Schoodic-Lake-LakeviewMaine-143168409095986/ a week or so ago. In one week the total reach was 159,128 people with several folks from overseas, over 1700 other folks shared that picture as well.
Woodchip you are very lucky to have built up the trust of the Eagle ( of course fresh fish helps also :)
Again all 163,086 people thank-you
-
Thank you for sharing I have had many people get back to me from Facebook it is an enjoyable thing to share my Photos with all . I have many wild life photos of Deer , Bear, Lynx, Moose and many birds . My Past time over the years is spending my time up north with my camera. enjoy

Great pics ! This years Pa live eagle cam has a pretty good infrared night vision camera. Not bad audio either. All live! Birds are on two more eggs again this time too !
-
Those are great pics indeed. I take a few pics as well and understand how difficult it can be sometimes.
Not to hijack but this is probably my best eagle pic.

Check out the dukes farm eagle cam in Hillsborough NJ great camera last year it showed the eagle killing a hawk while sitting on its nest 3 miles from my old home

Found this interesting. Must be going to use it for nesting material.

We had that happen on the nursery I worked at in Washington state. We called the fish and game department and they assured us that prying the claws apart with plaits would not hurt the birds. It was pretty neat to hold one in my arms. They are huge when you get up close.
-
very nice pics. Thanks for sharing
-
They tangled their claws together?!? Wow, didn't think that was a thing like with deer and locked antlers.
-
Fine spruce grouse specimen there.
-
Check out the dukes farm eagle cam a baby an egg and a trout in it last year the eagle killed a hawk when it attracted the nest
