North Pond Today
« on: Dec 08, 2018, 04:54 PM »
I went to North Pond in Savoy State Forest with my "#2 son" (as Charlie Chan would say) from 12 to 4 PM this afternoon.

Sunny, no wind, temps about 20 degrees.

Snow cover on the ground down to the Pond varied, but probably averaged about 6 to 8 inches.

On the Pond itself, bare spots were interspersed with larger sections covered with about an inch of snow.

There was about 8 inches of good hard ice on the Pond.

We set up four jigging rods (which is all we had) and two tipups, all baited with night crawler sections. (We could have set up more tip ups, but there didn't seem to be much point - - see below).

During the four hours there, we didn't have a single flag - - although something managed to steal the bait on one of our tip ups.

We did have a modest degree of action on the jigging rods. We each caught two browns - - mine were 9" and 10" while my son's were 9" and 11".

We kept the 11" for a buddy of mine, and released the other three.

To pass the time, I made a few loops of the Pond on my cross country skiis, and chatted with an icefishing acquaintance parked on the shore who said he planned to start the season next week.

Nice job finding ice and getting out.
A bad day of ice fishing is better than any day at work!
