I used to put a dead smelt on the bottom in my early days and have to say that live smelt out performs them easily.  And I agree on no deeper under the ice than 6-8 feet and some just under.  There was a post on here a while ago where a guy had attached a clothes pin to his tip up to prevent big bait from tripping the flag.  That would be worth trying with big smelt.  The more lively the smelt pulling against the rigging the better also, as a baitfish in distress to a laker is like Sam Adams and Cheeseburgers to us, can't resist it.

I also remember back in the late 90's Keith Chamberlain (I think) won the summer time Quad lakes derby in Barton with a huge laker out of Shadow Lake in Glover.  Its dorsal fin was all rubbed and frayed and the biologist in the newspaper article said that it was from skimming under the ice for smelt.

And since I wrote this I'm remembering that if your fishing Magog the deepest spot is around 34 feet with most of it 20-30.  So if you have a 10 foot leader with the leader out and a big smelt on you fishing shallow but mid depth.

And for super spooky fish like on Willoughby a sinker is just on more thing to spook them.  And to tangle up your live bait resulting in a f@#$%ed up presentation under your tip up and not even knowing it.
Farewell and adieu, to you fair spanish ladies. Farewell and adieu, you ladies of Spain. For we've just received orders, for to sail back to Boston. And so nevermore, shall we see you again.

Some just under the ice especially first thing in the am and some on bottom.  On days when the bite is good it doesn't seem to matter, they'll hit anywhere.

I think, if you can find minnows and smelt you will find lakers. Couple weeks ago, (Memphremagog Lake) i saw clouds of smelt on my sonar, four feet above big fish... Few minutes after we caught 2 lakers, 26 and 27 inches.
The hang around where is the lunch is. They spent less energy like this. Last week, same thing but, 5 feet bellow the ice, laker 36 inches 15 pound. a lot of smelt around.

Guy, you must be at the lake trout end of Magog. I've never caught a laker there, but I've caught some real nice landlocks and rainbows over the years. Magog is one of my favorite  landlock spots.

Lake trout are wherever they want to be.  There are only 3 defining features in a frozen lake: bottom, top, and thermocline.  Since trouts are cold-water fish, they are comfortable all over in the winter.  Caught them in 90 ft.  Caught them in 4 ft.  I catch at least half of my lakers in the top 8 feet.  They can see a long ways in clear water.  They cruise under the ice when they're active and feeding.  I pick up more fish on the bottom during the middle of the day.  There's my 2cents.  For you hardwater fans...FREE.  Tight lines.
I fish better Hungry.

You right, I drill my holes in different Bay in north of the border. I spot, stream, structure and 20-55 feet of water.

But please, remember we don't fishing for lakers. I think when you are fishing for "trout"  in this huge Memphremagog Lake we always have surprise. Sometimes salmon, lake trout, rainbow or even brownies. We have to use worms, because no live bait aloud, but dead smelt is sometimes good. Great fish David, good example of fishing trout, and trout is a large family.

Guy, I just can't believe, that you can't fish for Lakers, thru the ice, during such a short period?  Its a shame.  Such a big Lake, and you can't fish Lakers, on Lake Memphamagog, in Quebec , during the winter monthes of ice fishing?  Boy, I would be making some noise, about changing that law.  Just my opinion.  Ha, ha.

Wow dam I have been ice fishing since I was a kid in NY.  I lived on a lake no bigger than a 1/4 of saint albans bay now im living in St albans.  Never had a chance to catch lake trout ice fishing either.  I have been trying to find out as much info as I can on where to fish for lakers but there isn't many spots near St Albans though.
