Topographical Maps for MT waters
« on: Jan 03, 2017, 09:58 AM »
Any good resources out there for topographical maps? I'm thinking along the lines of lake-link.com where you can pull up just about any body of water in the the Midwest. Does the MT area have something similar to this?

sure will save time..in the old days you would have ta drill hundreds of holes and have many a natural reference..but with maps..cuts the amount of holes drilled by more than half

I cant remember the name of the site, but theres a guy in helena that sells them.  I by mine in great falls at the print store on 1st ave.  The maps have color coded depth contours and are very helpful for lakes you may never have been on.  There should be a thread on here somewhere(this is where i found it) or maybe someone else can chime in?

This is a Montana Company that sells a GPS compatible overlay that has most Montana lake contours on it. Annual updates are available as well and the price is right. I have this downloaded on my Garmin and it works just fine.

Don't forget the FWP bathymetry data discussed in this oldie but goodie for desktop scouting in Google Earth.  Doesn't cover all Montana lakes but some of the more popular ones and the price (free) is right.

Another free method of scouting is to visit the Navionics Webapp page.  Although it's not an interactive tool while on the ice, I zoom in on my desktop to an area I plan to fish and then use Print to Screen to print a map.  It's an easy way to eliminate the less interesting stuff before you get there.

Very nice indeed but consider purchasing a magnifying glass at the same time!
