fort peck night bite?
« on: Jan 02, 2014, 10:52 AM »
this is my first winter in MT, from MN. grew up with tip ups, rattle wheels and live bait. headed to peck on the 10th for a few days, will be sleeping in portable. cot+heater=cozy n mobile.

do the walleyes bite all night or do they shut down at dark ? most MN lakes are best at night, however the largest lake, lake of the woods is a day bite only...odd.

where can i get minnows enroute from Helena?

Thanks

You'll do well at night, should have flags right at dark then throughout the night enough to keep your attention.  Where are you headed?  If you're going to Hell Creek you can get minnows at the marina from Clint, or if you're going through GF I think there's a couple places that way to get them (GF guys can confirm for you and maybe have a number).  If you're coming through Billings either pryor creek in laurel or minnow bucket in huntley.

I have always had better luck with live minnows but over here on this side of the divide we have to use dead bait as live minnows are illegal.

I've had better luck with herring at peck than smelt if you are using dead bait.  But I almost always ran live bait, suckers and shiners.

Check out Roberts Bait and Tackle in the highland flats.

I always did the best on live bait too.

I've caught walleyes in 3' of water at night on peck.

At CC you'll have a little bit of everything as far as fish depths and water clarity.  Get close to the river channels and it was off color pretty good a couple weeks ago.  In the shallows of the bay it cleared up a bit.  We caught fish in 2ft and we've pulled them out of 30+  just got to spread out and see what's working.

Might see you up there, either going the weekend of the 11th or the 18th... or maybe both.  Make sure you've got a set of chains for your rig.  with the snow and wind we've had the road in could be a little nasty and the last hill is really not fun if it's slick.  It wasn't too bad a couple weeks ago, but the ruts in the fresh snow tossed the truck around pretty good.

Hoping to be at Fourchette the weekend of 10-12... All this snow lately and stuff forecast for Saturday is getting me a little worried about the drive across Dry Fork Road though... don't really want to fight 55 miles of snow drifts pulling the flatbed with 4wheelers on...

I catch most walleyes/sauger there at night or at dusk. We camp on the ice, set out tip ups with large minnows on points and inside bends of the old channel mostly. I use flashing light indicators on the flags and set within sight of the shelter, and fish a couple lines inside.  Some nights finding time to sleep becomes an issue...which is a nice problem.

Peck at night is a magical place.

Get hi markers like survey stakes , if snow is blowing on ice it can hid your tip ups, than your in for a search or GPS each one, but night on peck will change your views on fishing. You will most likely have the best fishing of your season on this lake, 20lb pike is very common for hard core tip up boys!!

double_a85,

I am looking to head to Fourchette the following weekend 17-20th. If you make it up there can you either post an update on road/ice conditions or pm me.

Good luck

Hahaha, something like that...

My old one was a random I plucked out of a book I was reading at the time I registered.  I never thought I'd be active so I didn't care and I still couldn't come up with anything clever so I just used my real name abbreviated.

Haha, I always wondered "is Henry Chinaski that guy's name or is he a Bukowski fan?"

I too am headed to Fourchette the weekend of the 17 - 20th.  I tried calling Malta (the sports store) to find out about the ice and roads but they were no help. I hear the ice is around 12" thick.
