I was on the south end early last December on 8 inches of ice I didn't venture very far but I'm pretty sure Trr gets ice earlier than most other spots

Watch for methane pockets also. It makes for thin ice in places.

Small sweetish pimple color pink with a minnow head jigging works best for me. But otherwise try various color jigs 1/32 oz with 2" live minnow. It seems like the color changes from week to week. South end is the best for the month of December, but after that off the main marina has done good in past years.

They've got vending machine minnows at the marina.  It's normally pretty well stocked each weekend with good sizes, but not a bad idea to have a backup bait plan just in case.

BCNU said they will not have a vending machine at TRR this year.  See their website at http://www.bcnubaitandtackle.com/ for details.

No minnows available at TRR any more. Pryor creek bait in laurel has a good selection. Just can't take into Wyoming. We'll be taking 10-12 dozen with us this weekend. Be in red Eskimo hut on south side with a pile of fish outside on ice!!!

Does anyone have any other ideas for getting minnows for TRR, if coming from Wyoming? Can't see driving to Laurel first. Are there any bait shops in Hardin, Lodgegrass or or anywhere closer?

I know you can jig up fish with a spoon etc., but any ideas for alternative baits for tip-ups if you cant get minnows? I have used frozen smelt before for pike..any other ideas?  What are the crappie taking?
Thanks for any info.

coming from WY you might have to try and coordinate with another forum member to bring some from MT.  I've seen a phone number before for a guy in Hardin with minnows but that was last season, not sure if he's still around.  If I get it I'll let you know.

Well there are 3 of us planning on going so we would probably need at least that much ourselves if I could talk you into getting a bunch more we could definitely pay you for them but don't think you can being this late and leaving that early

Is there anywhere to access the lake on the south end other than rattlesnake point?

There are a couple unimproved pullouts along the highway where you can park and access the ice.  Across from the Decker mine.
