Depends on shack size.  Can't beat the Buddy though.

The buddy is great, but I wish someone could come up with a similar, portable design and incorporate a thermostat.  Does anyone happen to know if such a thing exists?

I run the MH18B - Big Buddy heater in my QuickFish 3. It will cook you out in no time.

Depends I have a mr heater that puts out 8000-14000 btu and hooks to a 20 lb tank and I have gotten chilly a time or two. But I use it in a fat fish 9416.     109 sf

Yeah, the QuickFish is 70" x 70" x 80" and the Big Buddy puts out 18,000 BTU/hr on high. I do notice that if it runs too long, it shuts off. You have to open the door and fan a lot of fresh air into the house.

Love the buddy in our two person.  We tried it in a 6-man yesterday and it couldn't pack it.  Thankfully my friend that had that size shelter also had a 10K BTU Mr. Heater on a 20lb bottle too.  I personally think one would need a big buddy for anything over a 3 man.

Definitely get a hose and bottle though!  Especially if it's cold and you're running on high the whole time. Went through three 1 pounders yesterday.  That will get expensive.

Though the 20lb tank is a burden to haul, it is way worth it.  It's always better to have too much heat than be cold and burn through single propane bottles all day.  Lets face it just open a flap or a door to cool off.  The buddy heater all the way!

Most or all new shacks you buy will have vents built in to the top, so I always use my Mr. Heater and it gets nice and toasty in there.  The Buddy Heaters work well too.  If you don't have proper venting in your shack, I would go with the Buddy.

I have a buddy heater that I really like. I have not tried anything else in the last five years since I got it so I can't comment on anything else.

would be interesting to know how much the newer thermal shelters help with how big of a heater you need.  We're looking at getting a Thermal one next week.

I'd still buy the bigger heater.

I have a Coleman Catalytic heater that works great, has a fan powered by 2 D batteries...usually last an entire season and it really pushes the heat around...i've used it for the last 6 seasons.  A 1 pound propane tank lasts about 5-6 hours at high heat.

what I like about it is that it is light weight and doesn't take up much space.

I have to agree the big buddy takes the cake ( and the propane) i have slept on the ice in my frabill trek er 2 and i was warmer in that with my heater than i have been on some camping trips in middle of July and you can always turn the heat down but you cant make it put more out

I used my Big Buddy to heat my 12x17 wall tent during hunting season.   Works great for the ice shack as well.
